Interesting automatic info

Everyone knows that the same auto transmission in the fd is in the MPV, but what people may not know is that its also in the 929 and one of mazda's pickups. Also its in the Nissan Pathfinder, pickup, 240sx, and 300zx. All these cars use the same RE4R01A transmission. I also found that a new/rebuilt 240sx transmission can be found for close to 1000 dollars, but a new/rebuilt one for the fd is over 2000 dollars. My question is this. Since its the same transmission could I buy a 240sx transmission and put it in my fd with little or no trouble or consequence, If I needed a new transmission. I know some people say why not just make it five speed, but I don't have the time or extra money to convert it over right now if my transmission is bad.

I believe the Hold feature is controlled by the AT ECU, but don't quote me on it.

well I know when you get a PFC you lose the hold function. So therefore yes the hold function is controlled by the ecu

So it's the same identical tranny, just a different "shifter" set-up. So I guess our (FD) shifter will bolt-on to the tranny's that are utilized in the other vehicles mentioned above, once they are installed in the FD??

the fd has a different case #1, a 240sx version wont bolt in the car.

#2 the fd has beefier guts than the mpv/929 boxes.

if you find cheap rebuilds send them and e mail and see if they car build yours

Not true. Search. It has been stated many times that you can retain the hold feature when using a PFC.

yes ive also read the same thing.but ive also read that its a major pain in the *** to do so.Max cooper I think he the one.Told me that you need two wiring harnesses and you need to splice them toghether.Sounds like a nightmare waiting to happen.
Ive also talked to chuck huang at rotary extreme.Their test vehicle is also an auto fd.He says that the stock auto tranny on the fd can handle 350 rwhsp max.He also stated that if you do swap out your ecu with a pfc you can still use the hold feature.Minus being able to hold the first gear.So even if you dont have the hold feature actuated and you put the shifter into 1 it will shift through 1st and then it will hold 2 and 3rd gears respectively.I for one like being able to hold the 1st gear.I think 1st and 2ns gear on the auto are the most important ones.3rd gear is good for top speed pulls. As ive managed to hit 140 mphr while still being in third.Hope this info helps.

no problem.Im just glad to pass the info along.
I know it will help some others out who are considering a pfc.Im personally going to keep the fd and change it over to a 5 speed or im going to replace the fd with a 5 speed twin turbo supra.

the stall on the converter, the valve body, and some beefier internal parts are the difference between the 7 unit and the rest. the rx7 unit is the strongest if you can say its strong. Iam working on a earlier re4 transmission that can be built up alot stronger than the new one and uses a t.v. cable so you can adjust pressure manually. right now I have my not so stock transmission that was built to and does handle 400rwhp. it shifts pretty firm and when on it will spin the tires into 2nd and 3rd. makes for some great looks when you spin the tires with one hand on the steering wheel and the other out the window.

Zyon I'm in the process of getting my tranny looked at so I'm not 100% sure I need one yet, Is it complicated to replace the transmission your self do you know? Also how much are you looking to get for your trans and what condition is it in?. In case I do need one. Also my Fd will be in Minnesota. Again thanks for the replies everyone.

I guess it depends if you do it yourself, but it was actually cheaper for me to pay a shop to do the 5 speed conversion than have a shop rebuild or replace my auto tranny. Just FYI, it's worth checking around.

I just got done sinking about 7000 in rebuilt engine, different turbo's, and body work so I'm a little poor and would probably just get a used transmission from someone on the forum and just replace the one I have and probably just get the fluid and filter changed on the new one. That wouldn't cost me any more than 500 dollars including the transmission I would think.

Hope not! I went to a shop and when I told them I needed an auto tranny for an FD they laughed at me LOL Apparently they're rare in good condition, but that's before I was really on the forum. So I guess you're better off than I was! Good luck with it all!

it is pretty inexpensive for all the 5speed stuff if you spend time looking. I have all the stuff to do the swap and found all for alittle over $1300, I just want to see how much of a difference a built auto makes for drag times over a 5 speed at the same power.
