Intake Air Thermosensor Question (Yes, you are experiencing deja vu)

Yes, I've searched.

I'm getting an intermitten CEL, most of the time it just flashes, but once it stayed on for a few minutes. I checked the codes and got a #11.

So, according to the "Lightning..." site, the ECU is going to assume a temp of 68 F, and so my A/F will be rich.

Since I can't replace the IAT until next week, is it safe to drive my car this weekend (sunny and 80F is the forecast)? How hard can I drive the car?

Wait! I've got more questions. Will the ECU assume the 68F temp all the time (until the code is cleared)? Or only when the CEL is flashing?

Thanks for the help.

Air density will go Up as Air Temp Goes Down, so since your Air Temp is going up, and your ECU is assuming it's colder out, it will most likely raise the Air Fuel Raito, so that you won't lean out... unless your Inlet Air Thermosensor is calibrated to read 0v @ 160F or something a 12v @ -32F (if this is NOT the case) then you should be okay...

You'll burn rich, in other words. (safe)

I have had this same problem for over a year...I just didn't know what it was until I swapped out my ECU last week and was able to finally get a code.

Seems like it only runs rich when the CEL comes...which is once in a while for a few seconds just like you described but sometimes for a few minutes. Don't worry too much about it, I haven't had anything bad happen driving while it was on...you should be fine until you get a new one.

It's safe to drive. You car will just run pig rich and be down on power.

Call Ray at Malloy Mazda for a New AIS. I think it cost me $46. Fedexed.
