Im also 16, and that is rather high almost a car payment. The best thing to do is put it under a older persons name and to list you as a driver, that usually drops the cost a bit. Your still 16, and driving a top end sports car, thats the only thing that is holding me back.

OMG, $5,484.00 a year? For insurance?

Dood, do you have ANY idea what you can do with that kind of money at your age? Sell the car and start your own business - ANY business. Then, when you are 21 (I know that's light years away) you can buy any friggen' car you want.

Hell, I drove a '67 POS Chevy Impala for 4 years until I was 24. Cost $500 used and I only carried liability for a couple of hundred bucks a year. With the money I saved I bought a good suit, a good watch, and got a great haircut, every two weeks.

You know what - it had a HUGE back seat.

Sorry to say this, insurance companies quote their rates based on statistics. 16-24 is the highest age range, the FD is a 2 seat sports car, highest car type beside the exotics. The state you live in and you are obviously not married again higher rate. Honestly, regardless of how resposible you are, most people on here are not going to encourage you to keep the FD.
If you cannot handle the insurance, then there is no way you'll be able to deal with the cost of maintanence.

I don't want to be rude but at 16 you shouldn't have a FD. That's like having a playboy bunny nyphomaniac in your house masturbating all the time and you are expected not to touch her. ...yeah right "lol"!

Just as sure as you would be humpin her like a horny puppy on a leg, you will speed in the FD!

Why don't you start with a 1st gen? If you want your insurance lower, get something with back seats. My rate at 16 was a little over $2k/year which was stupid. I spent all my money on my car then couldn't afford the dates that I thought my car was getting me.

$457 a month is absolutely outrageous, but I don't think you'll find a much lower rate anywhere.

Do yourself a favor and get rid of the car. I know you love it, I love(d) mine too. But that kind of money could be better spent on something else. If I were to do it all over again, I never would have bought any sports cars (my first was a 99 Eclpise GSX when I was 18 - $300 a month insurance) and saved the money. I don't know exactly what it would be, but I figure over the past four years I could have saved atleast $10,000 in insurance money if I would have never bought the Eclipse or the FD.

I really want to buy a house now, and that $10,000 sure would be a nice addition to the down payment........

I know you don't think so now, but I'm willing to bet in 5 years time you will seriously regret getting the car and spending that kind of money on it, especially at such a young age.

That is way way too high. I had an MR2 Turbo when i was 16 (two seater turbo sports car) and my insurance at the time was 2K/year. I now have an FD and i'm 21 (good record) and my insurance is about 2K/Year as well. Try to do the education discount. There is even a tape you can watch that reduces rates (with AAA at least). This can reduce rates as much as 30%. Good Luck.

I was in your shoes when I was young back in 1960.

This will **** you off, I just changed insurance. Full coverage on my FD - $598 a year.

Of course, I'm 58 years old with a good driving record.

Find some old guy and have him insure it and you drive it. Don't look at me though.

heh, I pay about 750 for the whole year for mine.. full coverage and all.

My advice, sell the car or get your dad to insure it or something.

Please explain to me how you can afford ~$500/mo in insurance? Add in payments, maintence and that is $1000/mo. Man that is stupid cash to spend on a car, especially when your 16.

Sell it. Drive something cheap and put some $$ in the bank, invest in the stock market, learn something.

i have full comprehensive with a 250 deductible under MY name. i pay 1300/6 months for the FD. its my secondary car tho.. my primary car is a 1984 crx and i pay 300/year for it on liability only.

you can get a discount for multiple cars and if you sasy that you dont drive the FD a lot (my FD is a weekend toy only to the insurance company)

i'm 18, 1 point, no accidents.. good driver ( i scored 96 on the driving test) and good student discount. no 3 year driver tho.. i hope to be paying 1000/month or less when that happens..

my advice.. get a really reliable and somewhat old daily driver car. that will help with your insurance.. but if you cant afford the car then just sell it.. you really shouldnt own an FD unless you can pay for it

HOLY ****! Alright you guys must have some tickets under your belt or something.

I'm 18 and I have had a 1994 Mustang GT convertible for the past year and a half. I paid $2400 a year on it. When I called to get an insurance quote for a 1993 Rx-7 I found out that my insurance is actually going to be LESS - about $2200 a yaer.

How the hell is your insurance so high? Accidents? Speeding tickets?

nope no accident and no speeding tickets...........nothing i dont know why.....but i have the insurance on my brothers name (23) and im guessing he has some tickets........he owns a 1994 supra TT and i know he speeds so im guessing its because of him my rates are so high.........and this car i only had for around 3 months before that i had a 1992 MR2 turbo too.....so im kinda used to the little turbo cars....

im a responsible driver....so i am going to go and check out that class that you can take to lower the payments thanks and please reply more

ok.. simple.. when i got my rex.. i was 18. .
i got a 93 FD.. dont get full coverage..
and you'll pay maybe 2k a year.. maybe less
this is what i have been doing for a while now.. will keep doing this till i am 21 and rate will be hell of alot lower. right now i pay about 518 for 6 months.

listen.. i know alot of people say to get rid of the FD...
but i am gonna tell you something stright foward... i am 19 now.. and i find it hard to afford this car... at times i have to had let it sit while i collect money to fix it.

but .. if you really want this FD.. then.. man good luck to you i know how hard it is.. i lost a fiance .. ( soon to be wife. ) because of this car.. it takes that much outta you. mentally and physically. im working 3 jobs to afford this car and so i can mod it some what quicker than i wanted to. but dont ever let someone tell you what to do.

only bad thing about having the bare minumum insurance is that if anyone hits you.. you need to pay for it.. unless it was their fault.. then they pay for it..

but again... hey i wouldnt drive recklessly or you'll end in a bad bad spot. if you ever hit someone.

dude those are your options.. it really up to you.

I have many speeding tickets(1 more and my license gets suspended). I've flipped 1 FD already and claimed it on my insurance. I have a felony reckless driving on my license and I have full coverage and only pay $150 a month with StateFarm. And thats all before I turned 21 and my insurance never went up. Before I turned 21 I was paying $300 a month. I turned 21 and a month later it dropped to $150 a month. But I guess it helps to know some important people who work for StateFarm.

Check around for lower rates. Then sell it. Or become a Insurance agent.

Well, many people believe you should sell the car or what not. I highly doubt that after owning a 3rd Gen, and what it took to get it, you would remotely consider it.

Therefore, I recomend the following:

1) Stop insurance on it for the "winter season". Tell State-Farm that you will continue in the summer time.

2) With the money you are saving from not paying insurance, buy a beater car for 1k or so.

3) Then insure both vehicles, whereas the beater is the primary car. The RX-7 is a "weekend" car. They can register it in the classification of 7500 miles per year.

4) By doing so, you can achieve the multicar discount.

I pay full coverage on my RX-7, which equates to $56 per month or so. This is with a 100.00 deductible, and 500/300/500k claim insurance.

Good luck.

Mike

yeah, i have 2 cars insured on my policy and it is cheaper having full coverage on both than it is to insure just one. about a month ago my insurance went UP because i took off a 74 rx2. i pay now $239 a month for full coverage on my FD and on a 98 honda. when i had the 74 on there...my monthly rate was $189. (same full coverage on the honda the fd, but i had liability only on the rx2)

Hey guys, don't tell someone to commit fraud to lower his rates. Insuring a car in someone else's name when you are the driver is fraud.
