Insurance dilemma, please help
OK. My record is spotless and I'm almost 21, but the insurance guy told me it would be at least $3600 a year to insure. Is this kosher?
I live in the DC area, (Actually Maryland). What is going on here? If this is the case then I can't go through with the purchase.

You might try some of the more nation wide companies like Geico or Progressive.
The local insurance companies can rape you. When I moved into a loft in the city here, I had a 300zx. My local insurance company bumped my rate to $510 per month for the zip code change. "Hello Geico".

Could you please tell me what providers you use? I'm sure that rates are artificially high in the People's State of Maryland, but I need all I can get. This quote was with Erie, which is very good for the cars my fam has. State Farm might be a good deal, though.

Splinemodel,
Insurance rates vary on too many different aspects, number of cars on the policy, discounts, driving record, locale, age, car, and anything else they can use.
Just start calling all the insurance companies that offer car insurance and get quotes. Quotes are free, it won't cost you anything but time.
Just FYI, if you get State Farm, they are fine until you make a claim with them if you are young. If you make a claim with them and are young, they will usually drop you at the next renewal date.

Considering that I drive less than 5,000 miles per year and that I am careful as hell, I don't think I really have to worry about anything other than freak occurences. I'll have to check all of these fellas out.

my insurance
Wow, I am either lucky or getting away with something I shouldn't be...
I am paying about $900 every six months...so $1800 a year. (I think in a previous insurance discussion I stated I pay $750 every six months, that is what the company quoted me, and it ended up being $900, so sorry if that caused any confusion.)
My company is Mid-Century Insurance Company. I am in columbia Missouri, (I don't know if that has anything to do with it.) I am one of two RX7s in town.
BUT since I am in college I can be claimed as a dependent so I keep my insurance on my mothers policy (eventhough I don't live there). And yes I do pay the insurance myself.
There are 4 cars on that policy. I hope my insurance doesn't go that high (as $3600) when I am no longer a dependent.
Good luck!

I had Geico about 4 years ago when I had 1 accident and 2 tickets on my record at the time and I didn't even pay $3600 per year. The local companies were trying to charge me around your $6500 mark.
You guys just need to shop around.
Also, picking up a second car that was a 4-door, making it my main car and having the RX-7 as the pleasure car also ended up dropping my insurance rate back then.

I live in the DC area and Im 21. Try going to progressive.com and imput your info there. they told me to go for Allstate and now i pay $251 a month for an RX7 and a MX6.
By the way I just crashed my RX7 3 weeks ago and the insurance payed $4000 in Repairs, and when i expected my premium to go up they lowered it from $291 to $251. DOnt know the reason, Hope stays that way. Im hoping they dont update the quotes with this accident, but Try them. Im not saying to go for All State but Progressive does help you. And they can guide you.

3600 sounds about average for your age and that car in MD. I had a couple of accidents when I first started driving and when I got my 87 Supra turbo in 92 I was paying almost 4k a year. Barely could afford gas but I had a nice car. Man I was a dumbass...
You could always wait until you're 25 and get one then, rates are much lower!

Contact your State' Department of Insurance and ask for a summary on personal auto rate comparisons. Each State publishes one with several "typical scenarios" and the rates for the best-to-worst companies. Also, contact an "independent" insurance agent and make sure he/she gives you proposals from several companies. Progressive and Gieco are OK, but when you have a problem there wont be an agent around for you to call
BTW, I am 44, the president of a mid-sized insurance company. My autos are insured with State Farm (my company does not insure personal autos) and I just had a car stolen in November. State Farm settled with me in 3 weeks for a very good settlement.
If you have any specific questions, PM me.

Thanks for all the help.
With State Farm I'll pay 1100 for the first 6 months, and then 900 after I turn 21 in July. Of course, I have to keep my record spotless, but I've been fine so far, so I guess it shouldn't be too hard. I also may get a discount if I factor in the university student consideration that State Farm evaluates. Since I will probably drive fewer than 6000 miles and a lot of that being highway transit, apparently I can get a discount.
~$160 per month isn't bad. I can make that much sitting at the library desk occaisionally for $6/hour. . .

I'm 19, have a wreck and a speeding ticket and I pay $353 every 6 months for full coverage. If you only drive your car 5,000 a year, you should qualify for some other type of insurance besides "daily driver" insurance. I know I have two other vehicles I have on my plan. I pay $250 every 6 months for liability on my 300zx as my primary driver....my 7 is the secondary "weekend warrior". You might look into that. I also have a honda civic that I pay $115 every 6 months for

I'm 21 with a speeding ticket (74 in a 55), otherwise it's clean, and I have full coverage, $100 deductibles and mid level coverage in everything else and I pay just under $130 a month. I'm through USAA, you have to be in the military or government employed to get their coverage though.

i'm 31 and i pay about $450? every 6-months with State Farm (full coverage). but the 7 is also listed as a "pleasure" vehicle. thinkin about it, does that seem kinda high for a "pleasure" vehicle??? i don't particularly care for State Farm anyways, but it was my wife's insurance company and i moved under hers when we got married -- my insurance co was some local/state co and was stickin it to me pretty good every time i've dealt with State Farm, they've always given me a very hard time and was very uncooperative. as soon as my driving record clears up (next month i think), i'm gonna switch all the cars over to our home owners insurance co (All State). i'm not sure how that's gonna work out (and i actually had a bad experience with All State, too), but i feel that just about anything will be better than State Farm......sorry, but State Farm has really pissed me off so bad to the point that i just can't seem to get past it
