I am going to be 16 in June and my brother recently killed a third gen. rx7 engine... At that time he traded it in, not being able to afford the maintnance. Now I am looking for a car and from past driving experiences would do ANYTHING for his rx7 which now is sitting at the lot with a new motor... so here is the deal... my rents wanted to here some insurance prices... please put the price, insurance broker, and age.... State Farm will almost always be the cheapest. The problem is your age, If you want anything less then $400 a month I think a parent will need to be listed as the primary driver. I am 26 and pay 139 a month for my FD.

 

I doubt you'll get insured on an FD unless you are on your parents policy. Anyways, just call and get a quote from the insurance company. It doesn't cost anything. Just tell them the type of car you are looking to get and they'll work up a quote.

People get all sorts of rates, they are rarely the same so asking what other people are getting isn't going to help. If they quote you a higher price than someone else your age, you can't say "but Jimmy is only paying $$$". Just doesn't work that way...

If the car was listed as MY primary vehicle then the rate would be over $3000 a year. If you ask me, you could get the car, but it would cost you a dearly. You may even need to sell an organ or two. Weekly plasma dialysis at the very least ($50 a pop!). Plus a car is one of the most important investments you will make (albeit a poor one), you need to stop yourself from biting off more than you can chew. If your parents are cool with helping you out then great. Just remember that bill goes to you someday (assuming you don't wreck the car before then). I have absolutely no cashflow and any money I make over the summer I invest in stocks (*brag* I've already reached over 10x gain$!!!). I just work hard in this little 1st tier engineering school known as Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and my parents handle the rest. I suggest you get the same deal. But because this school is bitch *** hard I've only gotten above a 3.0 in one semester. If I could do that consistantly, then my parents would get a 10% good student discount. Also remember that males between the ages of 16 and 21 have a 100% gross accident rate. If you wreck any seven, then you deserve the same fate.

Hmmm, I am 21 soon to be 22. I have a very clean driving record. My rx7's are 235 for the 93 and 245 for my 94, and My f150 is 350 for 6 mos with gieco. When I first started to drive, I was 15 (legal in my home state) I was under my parents insurance policy and it was 600 for 6 mos on an 89 'stang with a 4cyl. If you are going to get the car, definitly have your parents as the primary driver and have it registered under their name. Also not only consider the insurance, but the gas and the upkeep. Thats what always kills me on the 7's the upkeep. The first year I drove my 93, wich was 2 years ago, I did 8000 miles and put about $3K in gas, oil and misc things that broke. that was more that my car payments for that year... your insurance premium really depends on the car density per capita in your neighborhood. i live in a very car-abundant area, in san francisco, and my insurance is more than twice that of friends with similar cars (300zx tt, supra tt, mr2 turbo, etc) who live just five minutes outside the city, and up to 3 times that of other forum members the same age who live in other states.

here's the stats. get ready:

18 (almost 19) years old, one formal point on my record, one tentative (first one should be cleared by the next quarter, it is from almost 3 years ago)

i even called around to different companies when i turned 18 to check for cheaper rates. they are all for full coverage under my father's name. here's pretty much what i got:

I'm single, 29 own a house, get a multi car discount (-10%), have a few points yet to drop off my license.

I pay $1080/year through Cincinnati Insurance.

Was expecting $1,500 - $2,000, so the $1000 came as a nice surprise!

yah, enough to buy a new 7 every three years. it hurts the most when the 7 is broke and i cant drive it. hopefully it will go down later this year because of 3 years driving experience. keeping my fingers crossed.

 

I had to do that also. My insurance as a 16 year old was going to be around $450 a month so I became a secondary driver but my parents barley drive it.

 

Jeeze I feel lucky. Just got the bill yesterday and I'm looking at $600/yr with State Farm for liability, $500 deductable collision, towing, and comprehensive. I'm 24, no tickets, one wreck when I was about 18, and I also have another car, a bike, and a house with them, so I get a discount for that.

NC is one of those states where the state has a heavy hand in regulating insurance, so I don't know how that plays into it.

In the UK, no mainstream insurer would touch anyone under 25 who wanted to insure an FD.

You could get some form of insurance from a specialist, but it would be a custom policy, probably over £5000 p.a. Only available to football players, popstars etc...

I had to wait until I was over 30, just to afford insurance.

Still, at 16 I probably would have killed myself in under a week with an FD

19/ perfect record/ good student / full coverage with State Farm / Dad as primary/ $212 a month. Still more than my payments.

 

Im 25 (just) have about 1 speeding ticket (15+ over limit)per year last 3 years.
1200$ / year full coverage 500$ deductables.

have 3 other cars Jeep wrangler, lexus, eclipse
here is the kicker I pay 240 month for car ins. the 7 is 100 of that
I have no accidents and my wife only has one ticket
I use farmers

 

We rode up to Evans today after a trip to the hospital (don't ask) and looked at it... It ha like 80k miles and a new engine... PERFECT condition... on the way home my mom said that since it is hard to find an rx7 in that condition, I could drive my brothers Sport Trac and he could drive the rx7 until I was 17... I would be able to drive it some when I am 16, just not as a daily car... But nothing is engraved yet...
