This is NOT my picture...but I'm fairly certain that the shifter on the right is the original MAZDASPEED/PETTIT short shifter. OEM is on the left.
I'm pretty sure the same manufacturer made both, so I doubt you'll see any "MAZDASPEED" logo on the one your considering. Notice the difference in shape and length of the shaft above the pivot-ball and the length of the shaft below the pivot-ball.
Note: I recall a thread not long ago that Pettit is no longer selling this design.

I also noticed that different Mazdaspeed logos are used next to the big brake kit and limited differential than are used on the the short shifter. Might be nothing, but given some of the other stuff I've heard about.... Besides, $400 for that shifter?

You guys are late the to the party. The threads in the link below are dead b/c they're FS postings that expired, but Ray Lochhead at Shane Racing was basically selling (as SGT blue mentioned) spray painted oem PPFs as Mazdaspeed for like $700. He also sells Koyos as his 'ULTIMATE RADIATOR' (cue the trombones) and many other things as well.

https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...t=shane+racing

As to whether the short shifters are also a scam it's hard to say, but 400 bones is about double what any rational person should pay

I paid about $350 for a mazdaspeed shifter many years ago, but this was long before any copies existed. If I recall there should be an aluminum adapter ring that sits the shifter up higher than stock to offset the leverage lost from the shorter throw.

Correct, my original Mazdaspeed/Pettit model has that collar since the lower shaft is longer and the fulcrum needs to be raised.

for what it's worth, i did drop a few $ on the MazdaTrix shifter - it was worth every penny to me., felt very "tight" when shifting.

I had an FD with a knock-off shifter kit which had tons of slack/play in it. ick.
