Talking import a new rx7

Importing RX-7's?
Source: Rotarynews.com Community Question
03/26/2002
Having contacts and friends within Mazda affords us to have very interesting conversations. Recently, we were talking about Motorex, and how they import Skylines and other J-spec vehicles, legally, into the US. A brand new Motorex-converted 2001 Nissan Skyline R-34 V-Spec costs over $95,000. This brought up a good question, how much would a dedicated sports car enthusiast be willing to pay for a brand new RX-7 "Spirit R", Type-RS, Type-RZ or "Type R Bathurst R" edition? Additionally, how many would seriously put down money, and commit to buying a brand new RX-7?

With the current exchange rate, a Type RS RX-7 costing 3,848,000 Yen would cost right around US$30,000. However, add an estimated $15000-$25000 in modifications to make the car street legal in the US, and the cost is now in around $45,000 - $55,000. Add in shipping, prep, dealer fees, etc... and a new RX-7 could easily be $60,000.

Keep in mind, the current RX-7 sold in Japan behaves almost nothing like the 93-95 RX-7 we have in the US. The turbo system was refined, it produces 30+ more horse power from the factory, the torque curve is much nicer, and most importantly, the car has an even more balanced and refined suspension. If you think people rant and rave about the handling of current Mazda's like the MPV to the Tribute to the MP3 to the Miata, imagine what they've done with their flagship model!

If there is enough interest in the car, the price of modification could go down to $10,000... So, would you be willing to pay $40,000 - $45,000 for a New RX-7? Let us know what you think? This might not be as far fetched as it sounds, and if there is enough serious interest, who knows what could happen!

Yea, we talked about it before....

As much as I love the RX-7's, for that kind of money I'd just go for a Z06.

I was interested in doing this, but could never get enough info. Japan has tougher emissions and inspection laws so wouldn't that make it legal for US? And if not, couldn't you just ship the engine and chassis seperate to avoid the regulations? Only thing I was concerned about was the cost of shipping. I would really like to hear more on this topic.

It's not really the emissions laws that's the problem. It has to do with crash tests and such...

no need for crash test coz there was FD imported in US. Therefore import a newer model don't need crash test. Coz the chassic are the same.

I don't think that works. Check this thread:
