Terrified.
Look at me. I know all about the horrors of FD's and I'd still consider buying one if I didn't owe on my Jetta.
Then again, I own one of each other generation so why not complete the three?

You don't need deep pockets to own an FD, but you will want to know how to turn a wrench, have someone that can help you.....or have deep pockets
Look at it this way, I found a guy in a local club that was cool enough to help me with my build....I'm learning, so some things I just wouldn't get through without MAJOR headaches. I also prior to this guy helping me, had a local shop quote me to drop a reman in....JUST to pull the motor and replace it with a reman (which wouldn't be opened and inspected, just dropped straight in) was going to run over 5k, that didn't include replacing all the screwed up, half assed stuff under the hood from previous owners, brittle hoses and connectors, etc.
For about the same amount of money and the guy that is helping me, I'm basically able to upgrade damn near everything needed under the hood that needs attention other than just the block, and also gave me the chance to clean the hell out of every nut and bolt under the hood, something that would not have happend with the shop I went to to start with.
Granted, this is taking about 8 months longer than if I had just paid the shop to do it because I'm just too damn busy at my shop right now, but it will be a would of difference in the end.
