The "I'm driving a tin can" sound in the winter-time

I think all FD's are a little loud, and I understand and accept that, but in the winter time, when there is a little sand/gravel on the road, it gets really bad.

Does anyone have any suggestions for quieting down that effect.

I'm not sure is the sound comes from inside the wheel wells, or from the body itself under the doors and such, but whenever you drive on a dirty road, it really sounds like you're inside a tin can on wheels.

Sticky tires or tires in general will pick up debris on the road, especially asphalt, and kick it up in the wheel well etc.

Most of the new cars have a bunch of under shields for that very reason. Plus to keep noise down and for aerodynamics.

cans are made out of aluminum nowadays
stop driving on dirt roads...

you can try some sound deadening spray in the doors
it probably wont help much so I wouldnt bother unless you plan to work on the stereo
you can also put mud flap guards, that will help alot and score some hillbille points on the dirt roads

LOL

I'm not driving my seven on dirt or gravel roads.

I do live in Idaho. We get a fair amount of snow and bad weather, and the roads end up being dirty. I'm not really willing to park my car for six months out of the year, so I take it out whenever the roads dry up and allow me to get some driving in. Unfortunately, the roads all always dirty this time of year.

You can hear dirt/sand in any car, but the RX7 is especially bad.

I'm not sure if I would be better off coating the insides of the doors, or doing something with the wheel wells.

Get some spray-on bed liner and spray the wheel wells with a few coats. It will help alot.

You should hear the vibration noise from my MR2 on snow-packed roads... Although if I put my finger on the stereo headunit, at least it stops rattling.

Performance is always a compromise when it comes to noise and comfort on imperfect roads.

There's a reason why cars don't come with urethane bushings and engine mounts from the factory.

Thanks.

That's the advice that I'm looking for.

All cars make noise, but there are one or two panels on the RX that are really making that tin can sound.

I'll try the wheel wells, but I suspect it is on of the metal panels.

I encourage you to check out the link I provided to the Quiet Coat much more effective than bed liner and weighs less.

Will do.

I've been wanting to get my hands on some of that stuff and give it a try for a while now.

Where do you recommend that I start with the application? Which areas will make the most difference right off the bat?

i have the quiet coat david is talking about. it does help with noise cancelation but i dont think it will work for what you are asking.

from my understanding, it sounds like the noise that is bothering you is the debris the tires kick up. are you running fender liners? i dont have mine and i hear the rocks kicking up all the time. i also have the sound quiet coat on the insides of my fender...

Thanks.

That's a good thread, and I've already silicon caulked my door skin to the impact bar. It worked great to take that tinny sound out of closing the door.

In this thread, I'm talking about the tinny sound that you get when you drive over a bit of sand or patch of gravel. You get that sound in all cars, but it's especially bad in the seven. I'm wondering where I should put the sound insulation to stop it. I can't tell if it's the front fender/wheel-well, or the panel under the doors, or the rear wheel-wells.

Yup. You got it. It's the debris that the tires kick up.

I'm all stock underneath, but I can't tell which panel is making all the noise.

It sounds like sand/grave hitting metal, so I would think that some undercoating or sound insulation applied in the right spot would fix it.

^yeahhh, i think tis more in the rear as the fronts hit plastic IF you still have the plastic fender liners. look under your car and see if you can find a pile or rocks anywhere... that might help... everytime i take my wheels off i have to fish out all the rocks hiding in my fenders... man i really need to make some fender liners....
