As Max suggests a schroud would help force air induction through the IC rather than churn hot air in the engine bay. One of the reasons I like the high speed pc fans - they have a schroud around the fan.

Another thing Max wisely observed was the possibility of the fans impeding flow from highway speeds. While I have no evidence, I find it highly unlikely that a 60 mph wind hitting the front intake area translates to a 60 mph flow through the IC. I speculate that the turbulance caused from the induction scoop knocks the wind speed down a good bit, plus the additional turbulance of going through the IC slows it further.

A good test would be for someone to take a air hose to the IC with a fan on the back to see how responsive the fan is...

random thoughts.

I don't know the answers here, but these are some issues worth considering.

Max, I noticed that your fan sits off of the IC by what looks like an inch or so - you're talking about a shroud that closes the gap between the fan and the IC, correct? I can see how you mean with engine bay air getting pulled into the gap and being churned.

Mine sits flush against the IC, and is identical to the one in the pic RX7SpiritR posted.

Really not sure how much flow the fans would block (I'm sure it does cause a bit of impedance however little), but nothing that would negate the benefits of having one. Afterall, the radiator has a fan, and it's unthinkable to have one w/o. I guess the key is the have the fan come on at the correct time.

Oh, and a vented hood to exhaust the engine bay air does not hurt.
