ignition timing tuning

I am curious to know how to tune ignition timing when you have an adjustable computer. For fuel tuning you use a wideband 02 and tune according to a/f ratios, but what do you go by to tune the ignition? Do most people with pfc's etc just use stock igntion maps, or do you advance until detonation? This would be dangerous if this is the case. Can anyone fill me in? Thanks

From what I have seen the use of a four/five gas analyzer is a better way to analyze and set timing without resorting the dangerous practice of "advance until knock". With it you can interpret the byproducts of the combustion rather than the effects such as EGT or knock.

I just had someone remap my car in the <3k/0 PSI maps and it can almost pass MA dyno emissions without any cats.
