Question If you eliminate air pump...am I nuts?

I just got to thinking. The stock belt runs around the water pump pulley clockwise and then up around the airpump before going to the main pulley. When the air pump is eliminated the belt winds counter-clockwise around the water pump before going around the main pulley.

This means that the waterpump is now spinning backwards if the air pump is removed???

I guess it works anyway???

The belt keeps the same path after removing the air pump. It follows the red line in this crudely MS Paint'd diagram I made here:

As you can see with the stock pullies there is very little belt contact with the water pump pulley. In fact there is so little contact that you can actually twist the pulley with your hand when the car is off. This is why people recommend getting a pulley kit if your going to eliminate your air pump.

Alright, so I am nuts That makes more sense. I thought I had seen the belt go around the outside of the w/p and not the inside.

You don't have to remove the airpump but what's the point of putting the pulley kit than?

Garfinkle makes an idler unit that replaces the air pump. With that , the water pump has full belt contact .

its very nice too. . . it only makes sense to keep more tension on the waterpump, ya know. if you dont have an upgraded main drive pulley then it doesnt matter, but if you have one then the tension is backed off tremendously from the water pump pulley.

I just used the Greddy pulley kit (and belt) when I removed mine. It works fine. No indications of the belt slipping on the pump pulley.

We really love to worry, don't we?

Why are you removing the air pump? The only reason I removed mine was b/c I switched to a mp, and didn't need the air supply to the main cat anymore. I plugged the air supply line after removing the air pump, and left the ACV in place.

I'm going to make or get that idler. too much slippage of the water pump pulley without it, especially after the back of the belt glazes. ask me how I know.

There is so little contact on the WP pulley without the new idler that
there is a tendency to tighten the belt too much so that the WP will
keep turning at high speeds.

Doing so has destroyed at least one engine.

I had a fabricator modify the adjustable arm that your alternator tension system rides on. My alternator sits a little higher and a little more to the left because it extended the bracket, didn’t have any issues with hood clearance and it gave me a little more surface contact on my water pump. I haven't bought aftermarket pullies like I should but it would help with or without those pullies I guess...

This pulley wraps the serpentine belt around the water pump, preventing slippage without causing a fitment problem with the turbo. An over-tensioned belt can wear bearings, break belts and even break the eccentric shaft (!!!).
