in my V6 ford explorer(dunno the max weight) but I towed a 3500lb trailer/6000lb forklift, it was semi rough on the car, but it worked, if I were you I would just get the full sized trailer.
I also towed a GXL convertable/3500lb trailer for like 100miles?it was towed w/ ease, If you get the full sized one, be careful and try not to break 65mph, you will start weaving a shitload!
I highly recc the fullsized trailer~

yes the car wont rack miles with the ignition off, i would also disconect the battery since im going to assume you have an alarm. it will be really anoying for 1300 miles i had to tow my car 100miles on a flat bed i put the alarm on valet but the lights still flashed good luck with your trip.

I've towed FDs on a dolly for 1000 miles. No problem, probably towed 16 of them on a dolly, many about 500 miles.
If it has a R1 spoiler that will probably need to be removed. Otherwise leave the key in the ignition in the *ON* position to prevent the steering wheel from locking. Disconnect battery to prevent it from going dead.
It is as simple as that, you don't need a full trailer, loading a non-running FD can be a PIA.

i have towed a couple FC's with a tow dolley. never done it with the key turned on though? the one i use has a swivel plate so when you turn the wheels stay stationary and the plate rotates.
an fc will rack up miles being towed with rear wheels on the ground (cable drive speedomeeter)
an fd will not (no cable drive speedometer) you do not have to disconnect a sensor or anything. as long as the car is not on there will be no signal.
for anyone who hasnt done it before. there is a pretty major disadvantage to tow dolleys. backing up is difficult if not impossible. makes it a real pain in the *** because you have to plan if you are going to park that you have a way to pull out without backing up
personally, for a trip that long i would put the car up on a flat trailer and go
