idle will get stuck in 5000rpm and it wont come down no matter what i do

My idle will get stuck in 5 rpm when i drive the car sometimes. i will be driving and all of a sudden let go of gas the revs stay there at 5000 rpm and when i put it in nuetral it goes higher to 7rpms AND I AM NOT GIVING IT ANY GAS???? what can be the problem i have lumnpy idle to jumps from 700- 1200 only way idle evens out is if i turn on A/C.

whats going on?

your throttle cable is probably sticking..replace it.

check everything related to the throttle system. check for anything that could be catching on something, when the throttle is in movement. my throttle would stick only at wide open. needless to say a scary experience. turned out to be zip tie catching the throttle, on the windshield side of the throttle body. if you cant find the problem, try cleaning out the throttle body with some carb cleaner.
