Idle stumbles when put in gear
Yes I searched!
The idle is fine when in neutral or with the clutch pushed in but as soon as I put it in first gear, it drops about 500rpms and tries to die.
The car runs good after I get it going, it's just a hassle from a stop.
Any ideas?

I have the same problem, but my car starts to drop idle up and down when the parking lights or headlights are turned on at night time.
I'm thinking it could be the alternator because my battery is brand new so it could not be hold a strong enough charge. It doesn't bother me enough right now to replace it, but I'll get to it eventually.

don't race, don't need to
Sorry, add number four. Put in gear, vacuum goes from 19 to 16, rpms drop, then recover. I've taken to blipping the throttle as I shift into first.

Try the clutch switch. There is a small spring-loaded switch mounted high on the clutch pedal that often breaks. My car used to die with the AC on and the clutch in as soon as I put it into first. $7.00 part cured the problem.

I was thinking it was the clutch switch, but I can sit all day long with the clutch in and it won't do it.
Is it $7 from Mazda, if so I'll just replace it?

don't race, don't need to
Couple things to note: 1) When I shift into 1st from neutral, I get an oscillation in the vacuum, from 19 to 16 and back again. Does this about three times. The RPMs change comensurately, but do so FOLLOWING the vacuum (i.e. vacuum causing rpm shift, not the other way around); 2) the manual calls out for not only a clutch switch input to the ECU, but a neutral switch AND and 1st gear switch AND a second gear switch. What the manual does not elucidate is what the ECU is doing with this info. Anybody know this?
Blackscorpio's right, it doesn't stall (mine, anyway) but I'm one of the hyper **** ones that wants to know why my car does ANYTHING I don't expect. Jeez, at this rate I'll have a heart attack (myocardial infarction?) by 35! But three years of blasting my FD will be worth it.

I don't think it's the 1st-2nd switch because it does it in any gear. Might be the neutral switch or the clutch switch($14). So where is the neutral switch?

Manual page J-29, top of the X-mission, in front of blind cover housing. Probably a total bitch to get to. Manual does show the proper continuity for all this on F-186-187, as well as good locational stuff..
