I quickly need help please *pics* (Steering wheel install)

ok guys, i made a thread already in the NE forum on installing a momo steering wheel with the quick disconnect hub adapter. well i took it upon myself to attempt it by myself this morning, and like all previous mods i have done to my car, i again have fallen into another dillemma..

here is the pic of where i stand right now, i have no idea what to do next

now, it said not to remove the clock spring but the plastic base has a plastic adapter where wires come out as you see in the pic, i dont think im supposed to break it or something.

here is a pic of the underside of my new hub adapter

as you can see, even if i leave the plastic thing where the wires come out there, there is no room to place the hub since it will be sticking out..

i have read numerous reviews about installing an aftermarket steering wheel and it helped me so far but the lack of pictures got me stuck..

i need help please

I belive that the wiring there is for airbag. Just unplug the clip and remove it. Then put the adaptor in place and slip the wheel on and tighten it down.

thanks for the quick reply

but the plastic thing where the wires are coming out are a part of the whole circular plastic piece. it will have to be broken off for it to come out..

but then i thought maybe i have to take out the whole circular plastic piece but then that would make no sense..

I think, first off, you have the wrong hub adapter. If memory serves, the FC Momo adapter works on the FD, and the FC hub adapter has a metal "collar" that sticks out and spaces the hub up so it doesn't crush the plastic turn signal ring.

I used to have a hub that came with a Momo wheel I bought some time back that looked just like that hub - dunno what it's for, but I don't think it's for an RX-7 .

If I recall, Momo doesn't make an adapter for the FD, but you can use the FC adapter and disable the airbags.

Hope you didn't throw the stock wheel in the dumpster, you might need it .

I'm using the Momo steering wheel and used a different hub than the one you have. Call Momo and find out if that hub is made for the FD. I'm using the 2nd gen RX-7 hub on my FD. Also, for the airbag light just reach under your dash and unplug the light. You don't have to remove the dash to get to the little light bulb. Good luck.

just take a grinder and cut the space you need. in anycase, that does seem like a fc hub. it looks exactly like my fc grant hub i have which does not have the space for the plastic nub.

^^yeah, i read on another site that i have to take out the clock ring piece, i took out the whole thing and the hub went right on.. im not sure what the clock ring plastic piece is for (im assuming for the airbag) but all i know is that everything went smooth after i took that out..

i havent tried to drive the car yet, i hope nothing is ruined, i doubt it..

btw, the hub i posted was the underside of it, thats why it looks different..

I installed a steering wheel a couple weeks ago. I used the Miata hub that disables the airbag etc. It installed fine and it has a hole in the hub to push the wires through so the horn still works.

One thing you could do it buy this hub adapter. It's for the Miata but works perfectly for the FD as well. Make the whole steering wheel install a 15 minute bolt in problem free ordeal for me:

^^so you have to take the clock ring piece off right?

well i did and the hub fit, there was no way the hub would go on with that clock ring piece on so im assuming it has to come off..

what is that thing for anyway? the airbag right?

I believe the plastic ring is what cancels the turn signals - it does on the FC anyway. Without that, the turn signals keep blinking when you turn a corner - way dumb.

The FC adapter has a metal ring that just spaces the hub away about a 1/4" so it doesn't crush that plastic ring. I'd seriously find the right adapter and get that taken care of - ghetto-rigging an adapter isn't cool, since a steering wheel failure is a Real Bad Thing.

^^damn that sucks but i can live with that

the hub i bought was an fd specific for the quick disconnect system

remember i bought a snap off system, if i was just replacing my steering wheel only, then yeah i would get an fc hub but i wanted to get a snap off system

if thats the only thing that does, i will sacrifice the turn signal cancellation..

thanks

I'd bitch at whoever you bought it from - I wouldn't sacrifice the turn signal cancellation. That will drive you NUTS, not to mention you'll be cruising down the road with your blinker on like Grandma.

Compare the hub to the back of the stock steering wheel - the stock wheel has that spacer built into it as well. You should see what I'm talking about.

http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/steering_wheel.html

thats the site where im getting instructions from added to my common sense (the little that i have lol) and it said i have to remove the clock ring..

its a must cause in order to use the snap off hub, it has to come out..

i appreciate the advice though

but if i had to choose between keeping my turn signal cancellation or the ability to take my steering wheel whenever i have to leave my car, i would choose to take my wheel..

o well, the damage is already done, there is no way im putting the stock one back

ill take pics of the finished task later on

If remembering to turn off the turn signals is too hard you shouldn't be driving in the first place That is a major "Yuppie feasture" on cars. Because we are soo freakin lazy!! we don't want to be bothered to cancel the signal. geez, uberlazy!

Nice install. I am planning this soon. Didi it bring the wheel any further off you legs? I am 6'1 and the wqheel comes close to my right thigh especially. I was thinking of getting the spacer as well that brings it out about another 2 inches i think? Just looking for your impressions.

the wheel comes more towards you approx 1 inch and since the wheel itself is like 1 1/4 smaller in diameter, it makes it more roomy..especially if you're tall and whatnot..you could however get an even smaller wheel if you choose for the real tall people.

btw, my turn signal cancellation is still working, i think the thing i removed had something to do with the airbag..

No turn signal cancellation wouldn't be that bad. On my work truck the left turn signal won't stay on, you have to hold it. It's driving me f*ing crazy, making a left turn and trying to shift is a major PITA.
