I dont know if guys recall the noise i was experiencing and i thought it would be my throw out bearing, because when ever i pushed the clutch down the noise would go away. Well i went to my shop today and i got the bad news my bearings inside my tranny are fucked, so now i need a new rebuilt tranny!!!! has anybody else had there bearings fucked and still drove the car? i mean my shifting and my gears are all ok accept the noise i am getting, anybody's thoughts on this? do i need a rebuilt tranny right away? how long do you think this tranny will stick out for? i have another tranny that is already to go and has been rebuilt but its going to cost be 1600 for the tranny and the install. Looks like its going to be time to borrow some money from the bank or rack the credit card

How loud is the noise? How did these machanices come to this conclusion? Have you tried a good syn fluid? Even if it is one of the two $20 bearings I would just try replacing them. One of them is very easy to get to. The other is a little harder.

If you dont think you can do it then send it to Pineapple racing and get Rob to fix it. I think it would be much cheaper than $1600. You should only be paying $300-$400 tops for labor to drop the trans and reinstall it....if that much. You can get a trans from Rob with new bearings, syncros, seals and labor for around $400. Total thats alot less than $1600....even if you count shipping back and forth from Robs place.

well they came to this conclusion because they had this gadget i stethoscope or whatever the same **** a doctor uses to check your heart beat, anyway they jacked my car up while it was running and he gave me the stethoscope and he put the other end against the tranny and there i could hear the noise. So you guys say that its cheaper just to replace the bearing? I am from canada by the way so pine apple racing is a little ways away.

I'd imagine $150 or so should cover round trip shipping and the cost of the trans is $400-$500. Then the labor should only be around $300 or so, its less work than replacing a clutch and flywheel. Even if you go with the $500 that plus say shipping is $200 they throw in the $300 for labor and your only up to $1000 and thats using the high numbers.

If I didnt do that I would throw in some real good syn fluid and drive if its driving ok. They all make a little noise with age, I'm sure you can hear stuff inside the trans. Let me ask you this. Where along the trans did they have the stethoscope? I'd be interested to know if it was even at the bearings.

If it drives ok and its not real loud I wouldnt do anything about it. If your going to replace it you might as well soak it for everything its worth first. Those are some very big and strong bearings I cant imagine a little noise means death unless its really bad. Even then if its driving ok I wouldnt worry about it.

i dont hear the noise at all when i am driving unless i am going real slow, they put the stetoscope right near the front right below the shifter area, and i could hear it, it wasnt loud though. So i guess i can keep driving? i might have to live with it now because i dont have the cash unless i go borrow the money from the bank.

i had a clutch put in a about 9 months ago by mazda, today i looked up my records to see the paper work that had been done when the clutch was installed etc, and i noticed in the documentation that says re transmission, now did they just remove the transmission or replace the transmission? i dont think they replace the tranny when they replace the clutch do they? hope its not a stupid question but i really want this clarified.

I have the same problem, getting bearing noise in 2nd and 4th. I'm going to get it rebuilt, but right now I'm going to just live with it. I asked the mechanic about it and he said, "don't let it get too loud because the play from the bearings will cause wear on the gears", which are expensive to replace, but at this point its not very loud. It takes forever for it to get any worse too, he said he's seen people go "thousands and thousands" of miles before it really went out, but if Pineapple can rebuild it with new synchros for only $400 (damn!!!), heck I'll ship it to them. As far as R/R the tranny, yes, this is done when you get a clutch job, but rebuilding it also requires disassembling the actual transmission, not just remove/replace, so this is much more work. In terms of a rebuild, its like 90% labor, unless you need new gears.

i didnt get my question answered so they do replace the tranny when they put a new clutch in or they just remove it? if they did replace it then i am covered through warranty!!!!! but for some reason i think thats not the case. Oh well looks like i will be buying the rebuilt tranny thats looking for a good home at my buddies shop!

Your mechanic is right about the fact that you shouldn't push it for long. You will be able to drive it for a while. I got about a half a year more after I started hearing the transmission noise. The noise will continue to get louder and eventually you will start to feel the tranny getting loose, and hard to shift.
Relax, you have some time to decide what to do.
