I need an fd (fd stories)

Hey, I saved almost 3 months to get my seven (1988 n/a GTU). I love the seven (fc and fd). Ive always dreamed of having an fd...the only problem is that im in college and dont have the money. I was wondering how long it took you guys to get yours, how old you where when you when you got it, basically the stories behind your fds. I just want something to keep my dream alive.

Got my first car when I was 16, a 91 fc. Started to save as much as I could spare for an fd. Got my first fd when I was a senior in HS to do a year long senior project of rebuilding/porting the motor and adding the bolt ons. That car got totaled two years due to some kid T boned me. Than about a year ago I picked up my newest fd with the money insurance and parting out my car got me.

I got my Fd almost 2 years ago for $3k, had an engine fire, so its been a long project. I'm a senior now in high school, and its almost finished being put back together after lots of my own hard work, and own money.

when i saw the FD for the first time in person 1993-94-ish... i knew immediately i would have to have one someday.....so through high school i worked and saved money to buy one....and in my senior year 1997.....my car at the time (which was a project in itself..lol..) was stolen from the high school parking lot....so that killed my savings as i was forced to purchase another car for transportation instead of continuing my savings....soooooooooo after that i decided i couldnt wait any longer to hear those rotors spin....and a somewhat decent 87 TurboII presented itself to me....i bought it and began to feed my addiction for the RX-7.....after 2-3 years of ownership with the FC i realized the big picture was still at large and i would never be satisfied with the FC when all i really wanted was the FD.....and the saving began again....selling the FC and the dailydriver at the time got me a nice chunk of change to start with...which continued to build for the next 6 months(now its 2002...)...getting more and more desperate by the day.....until finally i reached a point where i could aggressively pursue the real deal...i set aside 10k as my initial limit to spend...and told my self i would see as many in this price range as possible....and when i did...i cried. they were all SHITTY!!!!.....so after seeing 10-12 in this price range i began losing hope....and felt i would never find the right one....i also had saved a bit extra money by this point too, and this led me to my next decision....spend a bit more!!...upping my price range was the result....and then it happened....one evening while searching autotrader, i stumbled upon a 43k mile touring MB 5-speed about 400miles away...and i decided to inquire.....when the owner sent me about 75-80 pictures, i was FLOORED by the condition...it looked PERFECT!!!....he then assured me the car was just as nice if not better in person and i should come take a look if i were serious...hmmmm.....so you know what happens next.... the following weekend i went on a road trip that changed my life forever....and drove my car home the following weekend that was the best 5-hour drive i think i've ever taken!!

ill keep ur dream alive man, i got my FD about 6 months ago, im 19. it took me about 2 yrs of slaving away at my job working ridiculous hours. I did research since i was in middle school, and had to go through way too many loopholes and obstacles but in the end its worth it. the smile my FD puts on my face is priceless. its been my dream car since i was in the 5th grade and im truly happy. i wrote out a bunch of my story in the inspiration thread (i think thats what the thread is called). so u can take a look there. but man, if u really want the FD u can get it. its all determination. if i could do it u can too. sounds cheesy and all but its true.

hope that was of some use haha

I got my FD senior year of HS, my story is in the inspiration thread as well. The car spends most of the year in the garage while I'm off at school, but it gives me a reason to leave college and go home haha.

Got a 10th ae FC for 2800$ when I was 16, someone ran a stop sign destroyed it. Bought a 96 neon 5spd for 500$, put the insurance money from the fc in the bank, worked at a resturant(don't know how it's spelled) as a bus boy, made nice money. Lost that job due to a progress in pain from a knee injury from the accident. Worked at a UPS store till I had the money saved up... searched for 3 month's and found a VR touring 5spd for 12k couldn't pass it up. Sold the neon for 900$, bought a 92' ranger for 500$ I was daily driving the FD for a few months but chose to drive the ranger for the most part since I needed to save money for some goodies for my 7. Had a RFL leasioning procedure in l4 l5 of my low back so was laid up for few months. The stock twins were on there way out so all the money from dissability went towards a t04r kit. After going back to work I could only afford 1 part to support the single a month. So 1 month I bought a PFC, next a fuel system, next a walbro pump and some block off plates and misc parts. I didn't really drive the car that much or drive at all from back pain, just to work and back. Lost my job due to my back injuries, so now I am back on dissability. Blew my reman motor from oil starvation few months back, took it out myself since I do not have the money to have someone else do it. My turbo got stolen, spent around 2500$ on parts so far and just waiting on the motor to be done. If I had a life outside of my house I would never be able to afford this, just sucks having back pain. All I want to do is lay in bed, so the car is the only thing that gets my money... It's really stressful being broke from it but I need something to do and look forward to.

Nine years, a good size loan and a divorce before I got the FD I saw in 1993. Guess the order! I was 42 at the time and hooked on the Rx7 since I first saw one in a mag when I was 18 in 1978.

i was about 9 years old, and it was 1997 and my sister just got a new boyfriend, who came from california (we lived in michigan) and he drove a mint 93 R1 black with some very shiny black wheels with a chrome lip. and i idolized him for the sweet looking car he owned. i grew up around corvettes all my life, and the rx7 was like a new corvette to me, since i didnt know much about cars. well he took me for a ride with him to video store one night, and i fell in love with the car. and since then ive always had a dream to have one just like that. 10 years later i own my very own black 93 rx7. im 19 years old and i have my brand new but 93 black pettit built rx7

I was 19 when I bought mine. I had never seen one in person before until I drove by one for sale, turned around to check it out and bought it a few days later. Rebuilt the entire car over the next 6 months and it dynoed 325ish to the wheels at 12lbs. It was a fun car but I sold it this past July, thinking about buying another but I'm weighing all my options since so many other great performance cars have and will be coming out.

I bought my FD when I was 18 years old.... doing 11 months of research before even looking for one... still didn't know what I was getting myself into.. i'm in collage, and you know the FD's... ther's always something to fix so alot of time and money goes to my FD... current on stands, replacing the rear upper, lower control arms, toe links etc... for 2000 RZ parts but I love my FD... best thing I have ever invested in Good luck!

"the dream will never die" when you feel like giving up on this think of that phrase cuz it sure helped me out. i suffered and worked for 3yrs to get my FD, i worked my *** off and i was far beyond driven to acquire this car which not only haunted me through this forum as i researched, but in my dreams themselves. yeah it was bliss driving one until i had to wake up in the morning to get my *** to work.

also the entire way through this journey of mine i had the whole family going against me, saying i needed an economic car like a honda *puke* or some crap 4 cylinder thats reliable yadda yadda. i have an economic already, why have 2???? them along with my bestfriend saying "people never get their dream cars" just pushed me harder and the look on their faces when i rolled up in it at 5am was priceless.

all you need is guts, spirit, and the will to get this car. if you want it, you will get it thats all there is to it. only thing between you and the car is time...

keep the dream alive by staying in college. Nothing sucks more than to have a bad *** car that you can't drive because it's too damn expensive to maintain.

I got my FD a couple years after I got out of college. Perfect time to get it too. Young, money in my pocket. That was 8 years ago. And I still have my FD. Except it does not consume my life like a college kid scraping to make it.

I get to own my car, have a house, go on vacations, fix the damn car whenever it breaks. It's a toy and it's treated as so.

I got my car when I was 21. Didn't work hard for it, or save for it. Just waited until I was making enough to get a loan for it. Put $4,700 down, and picked up a loan for the rest, and bought my car from a first owner for $17,000. It had 59,xxx miles, and was what I have always dreamed of owning. Before the FD I've had a JDM GSR civic hatch, a SR powered 240, and a few other misc performance ECONOMIC cars. None of them of course would fulfil my dream of owning a DRIVERS car.

Man you young guys are soooo lucky. I was 40 yrs old when I got my FD. I wanted one since 93 but with a house and family it took a long time for me to free up the money just to have a race car sitting in the garage for weekend fun. its now 3 yrs later and the car is in near mint condition and every time I take it out of the garage I feel 20 yrs younger. every stop light I hit I get looks and thumbs up. a young kid delivering pizza's followed me home one day and said ( " man I love these cars, I want one someday") so I think it was worth the wait

In college I drove around in a Civic. I sold it after a few years and picked up a NA FC for $1500, seriously the best bang for the buck ever. I didn't even like cars back then. I kept that for 2 years and after thrashing it sold it for $1000. 2 years later after making some good money I was able to afford a FD. The funny thing was I never really wanted a FD and the only one I've ever sat in was the one I bought. I don't regret not getting to it sooner as I've had lots of fun with other cars I've owned in the past.

A lot of people will disagree with me but it's just a car. A really nice car at that but I prefer to think that it's still mostly the driver that makes a car go fast. My personal policy is to only own a certain model of car only once because there are so many other nice cars out there I'd like to experience. I don't foresee selling this car but that's what I said about my last car. The unforeseen took that one away from me .

college sure is a B**** but I'm sure its well worth it. I regret bringing mine to school but i dont have a DD so I had no other choice.

It'll be much easier to get one when your out of college man, maybe even get one for a self-graduation gift!

Thanks to everyone that responded. I think I will be content with my fc (maybe turbo ii swap it this summer) until I get out of college because after all, it is still a seven. I am determined to get an fd...and right after I get out of college im getting one, no matter what it takes because the dream will never die.

hey overboost, you should come down south a lil and meet up with some of the rotor heads down in the fed-tacoma area. i got my FD about a year ago halfway through my senior year of HS. i had to slave away for two years to save up enough money to buy the thing. i was lucky to buy it off a doctor who was the original owner, and had bought the thing in WA 13 years ago. it was a pretty good deal considering i'm the the 2nd owner, it had less than 70k miles on it when i got it, and the thing was completely stock with original motor, tranny, everything. you ever come down here i'll give ya a ride and you can feel the difference between the older brotha FC and the younger FD.

i bought an fc in high school and graduated and 2 months after graduation i bought an fd and worked during college ot own it i drove a P.O.S. toyota 4x4 with 200k on it that just wouldnt die. then the car broke but it was paid off so it sat for another year until just recent;ly i got it fixed. so i had an fc for one year then an fd for 5 and after all that it is now paid off with a new raceported motor, front mount ect... and wheels on the way and its almost a new car. i wont ever sell it. but let me tell you if you buy one before you can truly affor dit you end up looking at in sit idle in the garage because you cant pay to fix it because you can barely pay to own it. but it was all worth it.
