by the letter of the law posted above the car cannot be legit with missing/altered VIN#s, even if you do not now believe it was stolen. It will be tough to get it registered/inspected.

I agree w/ weaklink.

There is absolutely no reason to modify the VIN numbers in any way shape or form. Filling them in or even scrubbing them off makes no sense whatsoever.

Thats what I was thinking, even if it was a full race car there would be no real reason to destroy the vin numbers. I cant think of any real excuse to be honest. Does he have the title?? The vin number should be on the title. Sounds like he stole it or bought it from someone that stole it then while trying to sell it decided it was going to be to dangerous to sell and now he's keeping it to fix up for himself.

Also, you need to be careful around people like this. Especially if they know who you are or you live close by.

I agree with weaklink, there is no need to remove the VIN's unless you have something to hide, tampering/altering them in any way shape or form is against the law. However, if recovered, they will not crush the car. It will be reissued a vin plate with new #'s and retitled. Then sold at gov auction if the previous owner cant be found. There are vin#s all over the cars, some are not made public for this reason. Only the Law/Mazda know where they are, and they are well hidden. It is impossiable to remove them all unless you have the inside info.

I agree that engines are stamped with a serial number, but it has no relation to the vehicle identification number, and it is my understanding that for several years many manufacturers were not mapping specific engine serial numbers to specific VIN numbers. I'd be surprised if Mazda could tell you the serial number of the original engine for my car.
Manufacturers CAN trace the engine number to a VIN. What would be the point of a number if they couldn't trace it.

Be prepared to be surprised, Mazda CAN tell you the number of your original motor. Go do a "warranty claims report" on your car. Should give your name as original purchaser, date purchased, color, options, model, ENGINE NUMBER.

Gordon Monsen busted PFS with engine numbers. His original motor was in a 93 and the 93's motor was in his 95. PFS swapped them, was busted in court.

Totally agree with you guys. Why would anyone go through this pain to remove all the VIN number on a car if that person has nothing to hide? It just doesn't make any sence.
