I just bought a FD, help...

Okay i have a couple of easy newbie questions...

R1's are lower than the normal models correct? if so, when looking for lowering springs are they sayig a 1.0 inch drop on a base model or a R1? just a little confused on that... is it a good idea to use R1 suspension if you can find it?

also, how easy is it to locate all parts needed to conevert a automatic to a manual? anyone done this? if so, how much should i expect to spend? i can do the work myself...

my rx7 also sounds like its boiling over after i drive it... but my temp guage is normal... it sounds like the coolant is way too hot.

and i need to replace my door handels, both of them, is there any place cheaper than the dealer ($250L-$220R) for new door handles?

my gas door is also broken... i got it glued together with really strong glue but now it doesnt line up that well... anyone sell a new gas door cheaper $100.00?

my last guestion... my car drips a couple drips of oil at night... its dripping off of the crossmember somewhere int he front of the engine... any common places to look at that might be the cause.

The seal around your oil pan could be toasted, i'd check on that and also that there aren't any nuts/bolts loose near the turbos etc that are leaking as well.

As far as the auto-manual swap goes, do a search only because i don't know the cost involved but you have to get a new tranni, drive shaft, wiring harness has to be butchered, etc so honestly for that one just look around there's bound to be tons of topics for it and the cost could be pretty high depending if you're having a shop to do the work or just yourself.

your in deep water with the auto to manual swap, it's not the easiest thing in the world to do.

As far as the oil, it's coming from the oil pan not being sealed enough

just for the hell of it, also check the front of your engine pulley (flash a flashlight down in the front of the pulley) and look to see if there is oil welled up on the inside of the pulley. if that is the case, the bolt that holds your essentric shaft in place may be loose. Also, like the guys said, when the engine is cold, jck up the car and check around the contact area between the oil pan and see if there is oil coming from there.

Had the same problem when i first got my FD, i was told that the motor mounts wear down and the pressure some how makes the oil pan leak

get reliabilty mods done! it will save your life!

make sure your radiator fan motors are working, thats what happened to my car and it sounded like it was boiling(it was running entirely too hot! omg)

you may wanna look into getting a new radiator, aluminum ast, etc, etc,

Get a vacuum hose job!

FD is not a cheap car to maintain, take it to a local rotary shop, and just have them diagnose all the problems, get a compression check(85bucks?), Mind you I dont really have the time to check all this stuff out myself, as I work close to 90hours a week, so my best bet is just take it too a rotary shop!

As for door handles, are you talking about interior or exterior? exterior are rougly like 100bucks at rx7store.net/rx7trix I believe!

You can get a carbon fiber gas door at www.importfan.com I believe(not sure on the price)

goodluck!@

R1 suspension is just stiffer that the other models, including R2's. There is not "drop".

the R1 suspension is pretty good. its at least a lot stiffer than the stock rx7 suspension.
auto to manual: gotham racing quoted me apx. 4500 for the swap. but that includes labor. if your doing it yourself, expect to spend about 3000 for parts, and about 20 hours of labor. you need the clutch, flywheel, tranny, drive shaft and rear diff. the auto diff has a speed sensor that the manual doesnt come with. if you keep that diff and just take out the speed sensor, then you will have an inaccurate reading on your speedo.
about the handles and gas tank cap, check google for an oem parts distributor. ive check for the handles and they are hard to find for cheap. lowest price was 220, cash. hope this helps.

Okay, my turbo whines pretty good and i installed a boost guage just to check my boost patterns. i could only get my car up to 5-6 PSI at any speeds if i floored it. after the first turbo is done, the boost goes to 0 and sits... i cant get anything out of my second turbo...

Is there anything that could be causing this? this is a very good reasion why my automatic rx-7 is sooooo slow.

What would be cheaper? upgraded single turbo kit or replace the factory twin turbos with brand new ones?

I thought my turbo whine was normal... but i guess its a good sign of a bad turbo... perhaps my bearings are shot?

Also, how do i adjust my idel? in Park my car somtimes gets a little "bump-idle" and its very annoying and pretty imbaressing somtimes...

Learning is good and all, but at this point in the game, I suggest you find a GOOD shop in your area experienced with FDs. Alternatively, find a knowledgable owner you may help you out a bit.

If you are set on doing things yourself, then I suggest you take advantage of the hard work of some forum members and go through the newbie sticky/FAQ or at least use the search function. You can read some write ups, download the factory service manuals, and try to figure out what you've got. We can't solve your problems for you, you actually have to go out to the car and troubleshoot it yourself, given the tools in the FAQ or turned up in the search function.

I still suggest taking it to a good shop though. These cars have very complicated sub-systems and can be a lot for a "newbie" to figure out all at once.

sounds like you have some pressing issues you need to address immediately. first off, doing the reliability mods as suggested earlier will save you a lot of heartache! If you are somewhat mechanically inclined you should be able to do these yourself. Second, I would wait on the tranny swap and put more of an emphasis on finding a good garage-- getting your engine compression checked, sorting out your turbo boost problems, and finding the phantom oil leak. How many miles on the engine and car? Any mods done to it? Good luck- and welcome

My engine is original and has 103K on it. i was told the comp is good from who i bought it from and it feels fine... its just i know its got a boost issue. i havent had too much time on my hands to dig into the system yet thats why ive been asking around on here to know where to start looking. i've built my own cars by hand so i can do it myself, its just this is my first rotary twin turbo. its way different from what im used to.

get a shop manual and read this website http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/ it gives you a lot of info about your car. If you're not sure what you are doing ask the forum(search first). Don't let any mech. touch your car. Make sure they know about rotaries other wise they are just as good as you doing it yourself. If you're not trying to make it fast keep it stock. once you start upgrading stuff problems will arise.

Hate to say it, but if you don't have the time to invest in the reaserch and reading part, your going to get very frustrated trying to take advise from this forum and won't have a clue if it's good advise or not. Even if you read up on the turbo system it doesn't mean you'll understand it, but you will atleast have an idea of what to ask and what information you will need to be able to ask the question you need answered. Like Rynberg mentioned, take it to a reputable shop for some of your issues till you have some time to read and can become more familar with the car and it's symtoms.
