I heard a beep! Am I nuts?

Last night I had a little drag race and when I was approaching redline in 2nd I thought I heard a beep.......is this normal or am I hearing things? Also my car seems to stutter in 2nd and 3rd when approaching redline.......is this normal? Sorry guys, I'm a newbie with the FD........

Thanks,

David

By the way, my question really is regarding if there is some sort of warning sensor that "goes off" near redline, or too much boost or whatever..........

The beep comes at 8000, before the rev limiter.

The stumble may be the rev limiter and subsequent fuel cut at redline. You hit redline FAST and may have gotten into fuel cut before the shift. I did this when I first got the car and was like what the hell? You must learn to listen to the motor and know when to shift.
Listen for rrrrrRRRRRRR shift rrrrrRRRRRR etc.
If you miss to many times you will get rrrrRRRRPOW!!!!sputter sputter

The beep is telling you that you should shift. I heard it many times in my FD when I go racing, I wonder if I can make it beep louder, because my car is too loud (inside), with my helmet on and concerntrating on driving I usually can't hear the it.
It is a great little thing that Mazda did to the FD.

Thanks to all for the great info.......probably just the first time I heard it........ coulda had to do with the fact that my foot was buried in the carpet trying not to let that American Made Pontiac get the best of me...... you know, adrenaline running high and all....... I knew if I shifted (the Pontiac being automatic trans.) I would lose a few feet.........so I prolly hung on to second gear a tad long.........Oh well, a kill's a kill..........

FWIW, many people have reported (and I concur) that the fastest times in an FD come from shifting at 7-7.5k and not at 8k.

*edit* Thats for a stock car btw, modded may be different.

I use the beep like a shift light. Floor it, hear a beep, shift. My friends FC sounds like his horn is blaring when his car beeps. Plus his car will start to make the noise at like 5500 and he just drives through the beep for over a second before he shifts. The beep is cool, great idea, but I agree that it needs to be a little louder.

I have just a few pennies to throw in. The same beep will be heard if your coolant level gets to low. Had this hapen to me when my coolant cap developed a small leak. Probably saved me a motor since I havnt done the linear temp gauge conversion. I would also not suggest listening for the beep in first gear since youll be into fuel cut before you can get to second. Just my .02. ;-)

Beep @ 7500 RPM (drive slow to see - in low gears the tach can't keep up)
Redline @ 8000 RPM
Limiter @ 8300 RPM

I believe the rev warning beep comes on at:

7400 rpm + or - 100 rpm (Manual)
6900 rpm + or - 100 rpm (Auto)

According to the owner's manual anyway.

If thats the case, you're not revving your FD high enough. Rotaries like high rpms...it keeps them carbon free

If only we could wire in a pre-climactic sound. Sort of like a good porno. You would know for sure that she's ready to shift. Actually, I'm not sure that I would ever leave the drivers seat if I had that going.
