Cool I F***ing love my fd

I picked my georgeous red fd typerR last friday form southampton docks in england and i just wanted to say WOW..what a motor!! went upto 140mph but bottled out at that.. smashing looks, performance and handling..what a ***** magnet...i keep pinching myself because i cant believe its on my drive..i have however noticed a small oil leak coming out of the eifini y pipe( turbo end) i thought it was metal but it is just plastic painted silver (how **** is that, for a performance car it should me metal!!) also the idle seems a bit unstable with puff like sounds from the exhaust every 2 seconds or so but nothing serious i hope i want to get it tuned on the dyno soon..anybody got any idea what it could be..also i have read that the typeR is 280bhp compared to 255bhpis this true?.mine is a 1992 typerR japanese import..

If the Y pipe is plastic it isn't the Efini Y pipe. You'll want to replace that and do several other reliability modifications depending on your emission and visual inspection requirements.

Tons of info here and in the sites listed in the stickies. Good luck.

Welcome to the beginnning of the "love, hate relationship" . You'll love her while she running, hate her when she starts acting up. Fds are great cars, with lots of tlc they can be very rewarding machines. Congrats.

"Nah they are all the same hp until the 99s"

they went up to 265ps in late 95, then in late 98, up to 280ps (for top models)

These cars are incredible. My advice to you is to visit this website as much as you can. You're going to learn so much info your first year of owning it.
Having a little oil in the intercooler piping isn't anything to worry about, but, if you can dump it out by the gallon somethings wrong. Treat her right!

Drivers in England are MUCH more accostomed to high speed driving. I was there 2 weeks ago and on the M40 north of London was cruising slower than some traffic at 100 mph (in a POS Mitsubishi SpaceStar or something). Plus people there actually respect others on the road and obey normal traffic rules (Stay left, go right to pass), where here people just sit in whatever lane they feel like.

Congrats on the purchase man! Post up some pics.

Hey guys..thanks very much for the advice..i tell you what ...this site is the absolute muts nuts!!..people are sooo generous for taking the time out to answer questions and even write a page or 2 on how to mod your RX-7.i have allready done 2 mods to my RX..1st is the cooling fan switch mod with much thanks to tom johnson for his great and highly appreciated idea..it definitly drops the engine temperature cus the temp gauge doesnt even go up to half way now and its even better with the air con on..and the second mod was the 99 spec rear light clusters(just had to get those round beauties).again, many many thanks to jonathan scott for his step by step guide to cheaper race lights!!
i found out what the odd `puffing` was..i decided to take a closer inspection of the crossover tube and found that the jubilee clips were not the tightest..i also inspected the air filter and found a bonus..an HKS panel filter ;-) i didnt even know it had 1 on!! after putting it all back together including the crossover tube and so on..the car runs as smooth as silk..no puffing or drops in the revs ;-).

next mods will be the turbo tubing upgrade/renewal, boost, water temp and oil pressure gauges, new rear speakers and a good old service.

i will get some pics up here this week(after a good wash of course)

congrats on your purchase man! just got mine too! 1992 FD with 1999 motor and tranny plus a HKS T04E turbo w/ Greddy front mount intercooler, 3 core radiator with SS coolant res., power FC, OS twin plate clutch.
only around 300ish horses, but it's fun so far!
PM me, always good to learn about new things with someone else!
also, i didn't see anyone mention this, but 280bhp is the max that any JDM car will be advertised has due to a "gentleman's" agreement between Japanese car manufacturers. if you look on most websites for cars in Japan, it's the highest listed horsepower rating. one of my japanese friends here informed me about it, and have seen it brought up from time to time. the point is, the Type-R's in all actuality probably have produced roughly the same horsepower over the years, but Mazda only recently bumped it up againest the limit of Japanese politeness. just a thought anyway....
