ever think that the boost gauge might not be working because there is nothing for it to work with? I never heard of a boost gauge just all of a sudden not working.

Don't waste $120 on a hose kit! I don't know exact figures, but you shouldn't need more than $30 to $50 in hose.

I think you should find your exact culprit. First get a new gauge.
I wouldn't bother with some cheap gauge. Cuz you'll just be second guessing the gauge anyways or end up buying a good one eventually. Then fix whatever thats broken. narrow down your search.
Most of the time replacing hoses will cost more when you start breaking all the nipples..

Also the large hose that runs from the rear of the turbo Y pipe to the CCV becomes brittle & can split venting all of the #2 turbos boost.

But I agree that the first step to troubleshooting a boost problem is measuring the boost pattern with a gauge...

It is the cat in the downpipe we where asking about, not the main cat..

And the tube going to the main cat is an air line.. Without it the cat will usually fail too.

Nobody has mentioned anything about him blowing near redline. I have no idea what that could be [coolant, oil] but it has to mean something. What is to say his turbos aren't fried?

When you took apart the intake system, did you check the intercooler to see if there is a puddle of oil? Any signs of oil in the intake stream?

That smoke at redline usually means you have a motor with high miles & the oil control O-rings are getting worn.

I don't understand. If you bought a silicone hose kit, what hoses are you going to replace with standard rubber tubing?

I'll be getting my motor rebuilt (or getting a mazda reman) soon so there's no real point in putting the silicone on right now

If you have to go through the trouble of changing the hoses now, why would you spend money on buying rubber tubing that you will throw away soon. I still don't understand.

Edit: After re-reading through the thread, it seems to me like your main cat has failed. If it was running without the air pump for a considerable length of time, that would kill it. A lot of people have experienced sudden cat failure, rather than gradual, so I would be inclined to think that is what happened here.

BTW, have you bought a new boost gauge yet to see what you are boosting?

This is a real old thread but I figured I add closure. I used to go by Asphyxia02 so atleast this ressurection is by the thread starter. But the problem turned out to be a split coupler ontop of the y-pipe to the pipe goin to the intercooler.

To you my friend... the original motor and turbos made it to 138k before loosing the outer coolant seal due to a blown AST. The motor and turbo's still made very good power even after loosing the seal.

Current status of the car is awaiting a new motor which should be here in less than a week.
