I am planning to get an Rx-7 Soon

Hello all. I love all of the early japanease supercars like the 300zx TT, the Supra TT, and the Rx-7 TT. I would gladly take any of those three. But there is something about the Rx-7 that makes it so interesting. For some reason there are more Rx-7's in my area then any other sports car. I have found two that i really like.

A black 93 with a new motor, 5 speed, and a few upgrades, the most interesting thing about this car is it is owned by a certified mazda technician he says it is in good condtion. I do not know how many miles on the body but i wil find out.

Second is a 93 with 56k original miles with stock motor. It is in good condtion but it is auto. Either way this car will be my daily driver for at least 2 years or up to 50k.

The car will mostly be driven in a 5 mile radius of my home. The black one is 13g and the red one is 13.5g. if i do the reliablity mods ($600 do it myself) how much other money should i put aside for wahat ever breaks in the first year of owning.

Also does peter farrel super car shop do regular repairs and tune ups on 7's or just mods. How are his prices and customer service? I want to only do reliability mods and in a few years maybe handling mods. If i baby this car and do al the maintence (Cost?) will this car be good to me. And can i bring my a car that i am looking at buying to them and they will check it out (how much)?

Also i am 17.5 years old but any car i get will go udner my dad as the primary driver. He is 63 years old and has a clean record. What do you think the insruacne would be a year?

I know i'm asking a lot but i'm trying to learn a lot about this classic masterpiece.

And yes i have read many rx-7 faqs.

Your Dad is risking alot showing himself as the primary driver - it's called fraud, and insurance companies are VERY good at denying claims based on false information.

If you crash and injure someone your insurance company could just walk away and leave your dad facing a major lawsuit and potentially hundreds of thousands (or milllions) of dollars in judgements.

Happens every day.

If you're only planning to use it on daily driving in such a small area, I don't think you should consider this car.

PFS does regular repairs, tune-up's, and mods and his customer service is good. A quick search will turn up many pleased customers. Call them for prices on what you want to know about. And the only one who can answer your insurance question, is your insurance agent.

Also, read more.

Yea I am around the same age as you. I wanted an FD really badly and have saved up almost as much money as a decent one costs but I have decided not to get one for quite a few more years to come and get through college. I have an old Z car and that gives me plenty of fun at only a fraction of the cost of the FD. There are a lot of cars that can be an alternative to an FD that provide plenty of fun but I think the FD does have a special prescense about it, you are right about that. Honestly it isn't smart to get cars like these this early in our lives unless money really isn't an issue at all. But the fact is money is an issue for a lot of people. I have been on this forum for nearly 2 and a half years but hardly post only read, if you do the same you will notice the amount of problems the FDs have. Definately check out the cars and if that really is what you want get it but I would like to advise you to wait until later in your life. I think you will thank me and yourself for holding off on one until later.

Alternative Cars

Yes i realize that i am probably to young to handle this type of car. And more so probabley not financially able to maintain and repair it. Anyways. What are good alternative cars that will get me ready for the the Rx-7.
I want something with quick accelacration, RWD, reliable, and decent 1/4. I have a short list.

1. 300zx TT (Do these tend to be less problematic then Rx-7s, better reliability?)
2. MK3 Supra Turbo
3. Mr2 Turbo
4. Mazda Miata

*Note*
If i find a nice rx-7 i want to pick it up. Cause nice 7's are slowly going extinct and i don't want my chance to pass me by.

why not buy an n/a second gen or n/a mk3? Sure not as fast but seeing as how you're only 17 it'll be good to learn rwd on... just something to consider.

learn cars first, I know youve had youre license for a year and a half but get a good handling car. A badass car that can be made quick and handles awesomely is the old PL datsun 510s. This will save you a hunk of cash also because of cheap insurance and gas consumptions. The 510s are really choice cars for swapping in the 13BT also. Tod Kaneko did it and ran his is the sport compact car ultimate car championship. It didn't win but it was good enought to be one of the ten cars to compete. Look into cars that are cheap to upgrade and maintain first until you have secured a job that pays well enough to support an FD incase of any unexpected problems that may emerge suddenly. I just got a new job and I make about 300 a week in high school in a restaurant. I just dump all my money into my Z and it is getting to look very promising. Once I get my stroker going I'll probably be draggin at infineon. With slicks I can probably pull a mid 12 sec run and that is with a 30 year old engine. Sorry for popping your balloon but the FD like any other exotic sports car isn't for the financially challenged or the uninspired. Miata are pretty sweet and those can be made into beasts also. Check out flyinmiata.com and you will see what I am talking about.

Just because it may be cheap to pick up, it doesn't mean it will be cheap to keep. Theres usually a large reason as to why it would be so cheap.

Miata. Impossible to have more fun for $5K, and there are tons of older ones in excellent shape. Get one from Arizona and it will look like new with no corrosion worries.

miatas have great handling and are pretty fast... they are fun to drive and i wish i'd learned to drive on a miata or a 240 or something before getting this car. but i HAD to get it. it was the perfect one.

mr2s kinda feel different and they arent super powerful... id like one though...

nissans are pretty decent, 300s, 240s, i dont like the refrigerator looking 350s that every rich middle aged man/woman has but thats just me.

supras are pretty nice. a bit ricey but its fast.

also to consider and more important than money if you have money... are u getting this car for YOU or to show off? i got my car for ME. i love this car. im obsessed with it. i could care less what other people think of my car. its not worth the money and effort if thats ur purpose... people are always confused when i tell them how much i love their s13 though...

in the end, if you want this car, dont let anyone tell you what to do. they can only advise you. its your life. i actually was looking at FDs around here MD/DC/VA but ultimately went for the tampa bay beauty i found.
