Ummm O.K.
If it's a 12 V relay, you'll need a 12V source (car battery, or charger). Energize the coil (if it's a mechanical relay, you'll hear it click), check the pole(s) for continuity with a meter.

yea you do need to use a power source to check the operation, MAKE SURE YOU HEAR THAT CLICK, you cant miss it. ohmmeter to check continuity

Clicking isn't enough.
I test one that clicked but the clicker had bad contacts in it. Obviously, electricity was going no where.

I bought a 12 V battery from radioshack to test my water injection kit harnesses. For about 28 bucks you can get a rechargeable lead acid 12 V battery. They are very small and convenient.

you can hook your relay up to that, apply power to the 30/51 and 86 source, hook your ground to 85 (maybe connected to a switch and then your devices to 87/87A. It works great.

Just make sure your 30/51 and 87/87A are fused.

The clicking is just the noise of the flapper thingy on the coil swinging the arm that holds the contact from one side to the other.

Damn it I shouldn't have thrown my old one away. I would have taken a pic of it.
