How to test ABS

How do you test to make sure your anti lock breaks work? Is there a way to find out with out slaming on the breaks?

Why not just slam on the brakes? Hell of a lot easier than most other things i'm sure.

Ya, do it on a wet road too, so you dont run a flat spot on the tires incase they DONT work.

you check for your brake pedal pulsing (that is normal)

you check to see that none of the tires lock up making a huge/long streak and/or the car to pull to one side or the other

you check to see that you slow down instead of locking up your wheels causing you to perhaps go in to an out of control spin (do not do this test on busy streets)

as i said before do not do this test on busy streets! you should beable to stop quite a bit faster then most other cars out there and they probally arnt expecting you to stop so fast. be smart and start off slow and slowly increase speed.

the abs should not cause your car to pull under braking. if you are locking up a tire, you would hear it. if you are not locking up a tire and you don't feel the pulsing on the brake pedal, then you are not engaging the ABS system at all.

it could be your alignment. it could be a caliper issue.

like they said just slam on the brakes on a non busy road and if you feel the pedal pulsating then they work, if not then they dont work, by testing it that way yu would not ruin anything. When I bought my car I tested the ABS to make sure they worked, and my car still okay..

Non-busy road?!

Try "empty parking lot" instead - a lot safer if you are indeed having problems.

You don't want any cars nearby. You don't want any curbs nearby :-)

Try it in the rain, you don't need to be going that fast.

if you know of any one with an obd scanner you can test them also just hold your foot on the brake and you will feel it! or like everone else has said go some place safe and slam on the brakes.

Ok so I tested them out and Im still not sure.
I did it from 60 and pressed in the breaks. Didnt feel any pulsing but I will have to check again for that. I didnt spin out of control but it did leave skid marks on the road.

I drove my moms durango today to chek it out and when you first stat it up the light comes on for the abs, and i could definately feel the pulsing in the pedal. Is the light supposed to come on in our cars too? Where is the abs computer located?
