how to talk down a price?

Well theres an 93Fd with about 70k miles from memory stock going for about 16500 at a dealership. It comes with a "free waranty" i dunno wat it covers though but i wanna get it below 15k at least cuz i think no ones buying this car from them so theyd be willing to part with it. But what are some things i can throw at the salesman assuming he knows jack about Fd/rotaries. I wanted to bring up a point about having to rebuild the engine cuz from what i hear from you guys around 70k is when the engine starts to go. But yea stuff like this or anything else that would talk down the price even some exagerations that he wouldn't be able to confirm assuming his lack of knowledge and willing to part with the car. Oh yea i plan to pay the full or close to the full amount straight up cash which should already help with the price thx!

I used to sell cars..and the trick is, either ask them for the card on the car which will show what they are in it for or just dont sign on the first pencil right away let them work with you and they will eventually put the price down...just keep telling them to do better..if they dont stand your ground and walk away...they will end up chasing you and give you the deal you want if they really want to get rid of it.

They will even want to get rid of it more if the car has been sitting there for a while..they are paying on it every month to sit there..

Don't forget that you'll have to pay taxes, license fees, smog fees, etc.

Even if you get it for 15k, it'll be 17k by the time you walk out the door.

I bet you they are in that car for about 10,000 to 13,000 that why a lot of sales people try to sell the used car's rather than the new cars because there is more money to be made for the salesperson on a used car..

I'm not sure that car would be worth even $15k. I most certainly give no more than $15k for it.

when i went to get my FD, i told the seller straight up, before any test drive at all, i can't/won't spend what you are asking... if you can meet me at $xx,xxx then lets go for a drive, otherwise i'm afraid this is a waste of both our time. i hate dicking around with people on prices. i knew what i wanted and it was what was infront of me but i couldn't give what he was asking (not because i didn't think it was worth it, but because i just couldn't afford it at the time). i was flat out honest with him, i think it was a little less than he had hoped for, but being the car guy he came off as, i think he appreciated my honesty and the fact that i was giving up a brand new 2002 RSX-S so i could afford a 1993 car of my dreams.

A tool I find very usefull is www.kbb.com I just went on there to get an idea of what that car would run for in Cali and it's right around $15,300. I would just say that the book value is about $15k and that's all you're willing to pay.

Instead of spending $15K at the dealership, why don't you spend that money on a car on this forum? There are a lot of people who just put in a remanned motor and are willing to sell their car for various reasons. Heck, you might even be able to get a warranty on the engine by the seller if they're really certain that it's bulletproof. Make sure to get it in writing first though.

You can even buy a car with a blown motor and put the engine in yourself and YOU will know that the engine is brand new from the start. Good luck!

I wouldn't buy from a dealer unless they can warranty the entire car and also run a compression test on that engine to see the health of it.

talk them down, if they dont take it walk out. They will either chase u or call u hours to days later. U will never get a salesman that lets u walk away

first off, never accept a sellers "asking" price.. smart sellers give themselves MUCH room to play with.. lets say in their mind, they wont sell their fd lower than 15k, which to them is plenty enough. they will give play room so they can only make profit. so they will say asking 17k, now even though the buyer talks them down to 16k, the buyer thinks he got a good deal but really the seller still made profit of 1k..

and also, ask alot of questions, give a question to a question..lets say the seller says, how much are you willing to spend?... say, how much are you willing to let it go for? play the mind game with him.. throw out numbers, try to get the itty bitty details to the car..

also, if you are dead serious, show up with a reasonable amount of cash or proof of you being able to gain access to that cash.. money talks, if the seller is in need of the money, he would go for it even though he is not making much profit..

good idea i like that asking a question to a question haha. Im trying to find an fd other than a dealership too i dont mind a private seller but if worse comes to worse there might be some amount of the price i have to finance but like i said i think im good for a huge down payment.

You checking out that 2000 car lot place? They actually move alot of FD's apparently, but they put quite a markup on the cars they sell....

Saw a '93 they were trying to sell with a reman engine in it for 17,100... damn!

Pull the vacuum line off of the MAP sensor and tell them the motor is blown.

Lol, pulling the vacuum line off the map sensor will make the car run like crap, and also have the nice effect of black smoke erupting out of your exhaust

BTW, if you really want to pick up an FD, I'd say buy one off someone in the forums. More than likely they will have taken good care of it, and you might just get a good deal to boot Gotta love rotorheads
