How to remove tranny bottom cover?

I know it's a basic question, but I've tried hammering the sides with a mallet and it won't budge. Yes, the bolts are out . The gasket sealant is like glue, and there is nowhere to start wedging/prying.

Should I heat the cover around the edges carefully?

(Gonna keep searching for answers, but none so far)

Use a dead blow hammer and hit is from the side like your shearing the sealant. It'll come off. Concentrate your around the edges, not just on one edge.

Ok, will do. I started with that but got a little reluctant to put too much umph into it.

If that doesn't work, I may try dremeling in a little notch at one point to start chiseling them apart.

Thanks for the quick answer.

I am with turbojeff - a sideways whack with a non-metal hammer will work I think.

The hammer on wood block didn't work. I was giving it a little piece of hell, too. Shearing across 1/2" wide by 30" perimeter of gasket sealer takes a bunch of effort.

What worked nicely is taking the dremel disc cutter and putting a shallow (1/16th deep x 1/2 wide) slit right in the split. Then a few taps with a flathead & hammer to chisel in the slot and get things pried apart. Just needed to deburr the minor edge damage caused by the chiseling.

Thanks for the help.

Pardon my asking, but what is that heavy light brown stuff all over the inside?

The transmission should not have sludge in it!

The last gear oil in there was Redline Lightweight Shockproof - it has a slightly mustard color. Plus a little bit of residue from the 'normal' gear oil that was in before.
