how much does a 3rd gen door weigh

hey there im trying to find out how much a 93 rx7 passenger door weighs without the door panel but with the window in it. This is for shipping reasons. the person shipping the door seems to think its 160lbs. I DONT THINK SO. If you have this knowledge i would greatly appreciate your imput. thanks greg PS. Im not looking for for someone to go get their spare door and bring it to the bathroom scale and weigh it . But if you do that i would sure like to hear about it HA HA. THANKS FOR YOUR IMPUT

Well, I know how much it weighs WITH the door panel but WITHOUT the window. but I am not going to tell you unless you deposit $200 in my PayPal account.

Why are you so concerned about this? Do you think the guy is trying to over charge you for shipping? Do you think we all work at UPS?

BUT MOST OF ALL:

Why am I replying to your post?

I should have weighed my parts while they were off the car, but I'd have to guess no more than 45-50 lbs. for a door, with glass, without door panels (which weigh almost nothing). They're more ackward than heavy, if you know what I mean.

Mazda had a "budget" of 50 lbs. for all the glass in the 3rd gen., from what I've heard. The rear hatch glass is so thin that if you place a finger on the inside of it and put another over it from the outside so you can see the thickness of the glass between them, you won't believe it.

Doesn't this guy have a scale? Tell him to stand on a bathroom scale with and without the door to get a ballpark figure. This isn't rocket science, obviously.

Narrator's voice.

Jeff sees post, realizes he has pass door in the garage, no panel, with window. He walks to bathroom, grabs scale and heads to the garage.

2 min later...

The pass door with handles, window, trim and NO hinges weighs ~48-50lbs.

Next question!

Jim, rear window glass isn't all that thin, I have a broken pieces in the garage, nothing remarkable.

Jeff

That's interesting, because they put an incredible amount of work into making the hatch glass as thin as possible and made it a structural member with its shape. Have you compared that glass to, say, the glass from the back window of a Dodge Dart?

A lot of times items that are too big for UPS go "dimensional weight". This is a system designed to bill for space taken up, as opposed to weight. You take the length x width x height /194. For example, when I ship out a fiberglass hood in a 80x77x9 box, I get billed for 286 pounds!!! Weight is maybe 40# total with all the shipping materials and box. Its pretty standard in LTL freight to charge by dims.

I would bet the box the door has to go in could classify 160# dimensional, easily. The charge sounds reasonable, depending on his method of shipment.

I will be more than happy to ship it for you, I have an account w/ r&l and it will probably be cheaper because if it is going to a residence they charge you an extra $30 residential fee, than you can just pick it upo from my store down there...

Let Me know

48 lbs is pretty light.... figuring that some portion of it is glass and "mechanism" mirror, and latches... how much could one hope to save by dropping 3k on a set of CF FEED doors? 30-40 lbs tops (for two)?

5 or 6 pounds per door, if that, would be my guess.

I think there are a lot of parts out there that sound great in theory, but are just an easy way to separate people from their money, if they're not careful. If a carbon fiber hood is barely worth the weight savings (2-3 lbs. max) then the carbon fiber doors are a huge waste of money for someone who isn't building a race car... and at that point, you'd save more weight by getting rid of all the glass.
