Question How many have had the Jacobs amp kill their Leading Coil

I've been running a Jacobs for a few months now and I'm wondering if my leading coil is fried. The coil is less than a year old. The car is running much richer than before---fuel smoke coming out the tailpipe, much more black soot on the tip of the tailpipe, shitty gas mileage (about 200 miles per tank rather than 250-275).

I have a used FC leading coil that Matt Schroeder was nice enough to give me and I'm thinking of installing it.

Before I rip off my intake manifold, does anyone have any input?

thanks--

Garfinkle s coil went after the jacobs unit was in for a time. He replaced the coil with a Crane Harley Davidson , 33000 volt coil. The Jacobs has not hurt the Crane coil.

Rich,

I thought your were running the Ignition Soltions Amp? Isn't that what Dave is recommending these days?

how can you be sure you have a bad coil?? i have same problems-my fuel mileage has gone to ****, exhaust smells badly of unburned fuel and power seems to be down. i have a crane unit on the leading. can you tell with a resistance measurement across it?

Get a neon bulb test light for checking spark plug wires with the car running, or heat up the car , and pull the leading wires off the plugs and put new plugs in the boots and ground the spark plug shells, then have someone start the car while you hold the plug if needed and watch the sparks ,( will not tell you to not touch the grounded end of the plug when testing , You heat the car up because a bad coil may fire when cold and quit when it gets hot.

Don't know why people upgrade their ignition on the FD since the stock ignition can hold 400 rwhp easily..just make sure you have cold plugs for higher psi and decent wires. Dave at KDR told me he tested the Ignitions Solutions, HKS, and Jacobs and found that both the Jacobs and HKS boxes really heated up the coil but the Ignition Solutions didn't. The Ignition Solutions amp didn't perform as well but he said it was within like 2-3 hp of the other 2...and much cheaper..only like $250. I think ErnieT runs the stock ignition from what I read in a recent thread and he's approaching 500 rwhp.
