How many FD's are left in the US?
I know there were about 13,000 built for the US market between 1993-1995. I've heard out of all those there were about 6000 left by 2000. Another statistic I heard is 10% of FD were wrecked in the first week of ownership. The statistics above don't seem too far fetched but does anybody have a number or maybe a good guess based on facts or research?
I saw the first FD other than mine on the road in Memphis last week. I couldn't tell if it was local. There is one with an LS in it at the shop a dyno'd my car at a few weeks ago but it's not running yet. There's also one at the local Mazda dealership about to get a new motor for $8000-9000 (Crazy dealership price) It's been parked in a garage for over 5 years.
I wonder how many out there have 100% stock paint and panels like mine? Anyone?

The most common number that comes up in threads like this is about 5500 remaining in running condition. About 15,000 were imported in the three years the car was offered here.
It is definitely a car you don't see on every street corner these days.
My car hasn't been to a body shop, though it COULD stand to some day, to get rid of the little dents and dings in the doors and fenders left by inconsiderate asshats...

I thought as recently as a couple of years ago (maybe end of '10?) someone on here ran state-by-state registrations, and could've sworn there were nine thousand something still being registered; that's a rather high total remaining out of less than 14,000 imported, and considering that the newest cars were 15 years old, with the oldest being around 18 you'd think a much higher rate of attrition would've occurred.
There were certainly more than 6000 left in 2000, and I suspect if 10% of owners crashed their RX-7's in the first week of ownership Mazda would have performed some safety recalls.
Here's a link to the thread mentioned above if you'd like to see the numbers from 2005:

If you have a factory sunroof, it's not a base model.
In 94 and 95 you could order about whatever you wanted as options. Mazda couldn't give the car away in the states leading to the low number of imports on 94-95. As far as how many are left I couldn't guess. I know earlier this year when it was apparent the recession was easing a bunch of low mileage FDs popped up all over the place. I've got 3 FDs right now, there are 5-6 more within 30-40 miles of me in the Nashville area. I know Zach with Addicted Performance always has 4-5 FDs plus customers cars. There are still several out there just don't see them on the road often. Just look at the build threads, most are down for years at a time for a simple rebuild or upgrade.
No, it was just over 13k imported total. Not counting cars who made it in from Canada and those who for some reason think it is cool to import a RHD FD.
Keep in mind after 20 years(roughly 7000 days) it is hard to believe that 1 FD in the US has met its fate on the average of one per day. There is probably 8-9000 left using logic. Who really knows though or really cares. The car is going up in value for clean low mileage examples. NADA now views the 93s as classics(5 more months and the 94s will be viewed the same) and the values have jumped drastically which helps with acquiring loans for those needing assistance to purchase the cars.

I would rather have a LHD low mileage unit, but money talks and I try to listen...

I don't think it's cool per-say... But it allowed me to purchase my dream car at nearly half the going rate for equal LHD model... With money left over in the bank for a rebuild if needed.

So what would I call mine?
According to DJseven it's possible that yours was custom ordered as a base with a sunroof. Is your sunroof glass or metal?
It is much more likely that your car is a PEG or touring model. After 20 some years many FD's are a hodgepodge of options and customizations.

94RX7R2,
I too have a 94 Chaste White with sunroof (metal), no fog lights, no Bose, and no rear wiper. Only difference is it has black leather interior.
I bought it in 2010. Never checked to see if the rear hatch was stock or had it been replaced with a non-wiper one.
