How long does your Fan stay on after shutting down?

I drove this morning in not very hot weather, say about 70 F for about 1/2 hour and not very hard......I put my car in the garage and shut off the engine and noticed the fan stayed on. This is the first time I've ever noticed that it stays on after you shut off.....I waited a minute or so, and it didn't shut off so I put my key back en and started it up, I waited 30 seconds with the engine on, then the fan shut off and I turned off the engine......Is this normal or is my FD running hotter? No noticeable difference in the temperature gauge....

I noticed this after I performed the fan mod. I know some people say that it is normal for the 94-95's and 93's that have had the recall performed, but I never noticed it until after the fan mod. My car is a 93 with the recall performed. I think that if the fans were ever engaged at level 2 or higher while the car was running it is normal for the fans to run for a while (up to 10mins maybe?) after shutdown, but I've never heard any confirmation of that. Anyone know the facts on this?

It comes on in two modes depending on how hot it gets. In the first 'on' mode, it shuts off 30-60 sec after engine off. If it's pretty hot, it can stay on as long as 10 min. It's also a good idea to pop the hood if it stays on for a while.

Pay close attention to the temp gauge. The stock gauge is almost useless but if you see it a little higher than 1/2 way, be very careful. If any check engine light should come on, read the code and fix it.

yep, the way i understand it,
it should not come on, but if it does, it will stay on for 10 minutes.

and when it does that, that is VERY BAD SIGN,
it means the engine is running very hot.

It did that on mine once, and the next time it happened, my engine blew,

so be careful!, i'd say get it checked out... although i wouldnt
know what to look for, check your cooling system for problems.

Hey don't scare me man....I turned the engine on after the fan was on for 2 minutes and it seem to stop and I shut off the engine.....Do you think this is a cooling system problem? I actually hadn't driven the car for 3 weeks before this.

When I was stock the fan would come on after driving on a hot day (95+) about a minute after shutting the car down. I assume heat soak and then the car fans cut on to cool the car down. Fans were on for about 2 minutes then shut down.

With my upgraded radiator, the fans never come on after shut down, even after "spirited driving".

I have the fan mod now and using that keeps the fans on for 10 minutes after shut down.

don't know if any of that helps anyone but thats just what happens with me.

I've had this happen a few times. When the car is very thoroughly heat soaked, it will stay on for 10 minutes after shutoff. This is determined by how long the temps were above a certain level before shutoff (something like temps above 220 for more than 10 minutes or something like that). I can also get the fans to turn on if I leave the key in the ACC position, if the temp is above 200 or so, and if the car heat soaks enough they will stay on even after removing the key if I leave it in for a few minutes. Now that I have a new thermostat and Fluidyne, that doesn't happen anymore, but it is designed to happen.

Fan Mod

I have a 94 touring with the fan mod and if I have my ignition on for two minutes (without ever starting the car) my fan will turn on. I've found that once it turns on it will run for ten minutes again the motor was never run. I stumbled onto this by accident when I was working on my power antena.

If you have the fan mod you shouldn't leave the switch in the "on" position because it will slowly drain the battery (from the relay being open). Does it do this even with the switch off?

Let it fan, baby!

I have a 95 FD and YES the fan does come on after spirited driving for about 10 minutes. I think its safe to say that you should have your stock radiator fluid changed on a regular basis. If you have kept up good maintaince then having the fan come on is a good thing!!

Remember, if your car (whatever it may be) overheats, you should leave the engine running in order to keep the fan on. Aside note: a recent 4wheeling trip in my Jeep resulted in temp gauge rising above a comfortable level. When I stopped and turned off the engine the temp continued to rise. I then let the engine idle and wow...the temp gauge begin to drop immediately.

I therefore am under the belief that the fan staying on means the engine is "hot" but thats what the fan is for. As for the battery thing...hell, I rather buy a battery than a new engine. Damn the battery...let it run the fan!!

In fact, I have a fan in my garage that I aim at my engine bay and keep it on after I pull in to the garage. I always pop my hood and presto....COOL FD, BABY!

Even though the fans aren't running, keeping the relay open still drains a very small amount of juice, and it will eventually drain the battery (I think it takes a few days). I'm not sure from a Physics standpoint why this is, but it takes juice to open the relays (ever notice the "click" sound when turning the key to ACC power?) in the first place so you can see why that would make sense. I'm sure an EE guy around here can explain why that is.

Slow Battery drain

Thanks for the heads up....as a matter of fact it would take a couple of days but the battery would get weaker. I charged it all day yesterday and used the switch like I normaly do when driving. If I'm going to come right back I left the switch on...if I was going to leave the car for an extended period of time I'd turn it off. This morning after I got through with work the car started up like it had a new battery in it. Thanks for catching this as I was going to replace the battery.
