how to install an after market autometer tach?

Hey guys I will be installing my aftermarket tach by autometer with a shift light tommorow. My question is there anywhere that i can go to that can show me step by step on how to install the tach? what wires do i have to splice into? do i splice into the stock tach wires? where do I look and where do i splice into? pictures would be great!

no, i dont think you splice into the stock tach connections. at least from seeing how my friends with hondas do it, the most accurate way to do it is to splice into the ignition coil wires. the tach should have instructions in the box.

why do you need a big ricer tach anyway? the one in the dashboard is perfectly accurate and just about the same size too...

Will it is big enough but i do like the autometer one because i can mount where ever i like so i can see it better when I'am shifting, not only that i like the shift light that comes with it, anyhow does anybody know where the ignition coils are located? pics would be nice so i know where to go, a step by step on how to install the tach would be nice.

I don't think you are going to get many pics or step by step instructions here. Most people do not install aftermarket tachs into thier FDs.

I thought the 4 1/2 inch factory tach smack dab in the middle of the dash was sufficient enough for me . But thats just my two cents

The stock ignition coils are under the intake manifold. In order to get to the wires you would be better off opening up the wiring harness and tapping in. Not a begginer job

tell me that the autometer tach is not your first mod. you dont sound as if you know your way around the FD very well. i think you should start reading a manual and doing homework.

That's what I was thinking...Autometer makes JUST the shift lite with pills...

I am one of the FEW 7 owners with a tach w/ shift lite...but it is part of the Defi Link System, so that's why it's in my set.

If you don't think you can put this in my car...then don't...

I don't think you NEED to splice into the ignition coil wires...you could just splice into the RPM signal wire going to your ECU. At least that's what I did and it seems to be right on with the stock tach...part of the reason I installed an aftermarket tach is that my aftermarket steering wheel cuts off my vision to the stock tach. But I'm planning on removing it soon and getting a different steering wheel.

Isn't the audible BEEP enough? Not sure what RPM range the audible tone kicks in, but that should be enough to tell you IT"S TIME TO SHIFT!!!

This is so sad, yet so funny. It's sad to be drag racing this car in the first place. It's sad that he has no clue where the ignition coils are. And it's funny that you don't know the sound of the car well enough to know when to shift, so you need a light to tell you.

I think the shift light is a waste of time and resources on an FD.

The FD is one of the few cars that I know of that made the TACH the primary gauge, large and in the center (If anyone else has done this before the FD, please list the car, because I think everyone else with recent cars with the center tach has copied Mazda's idea).

The FD is the ONLY car I know of that has an audible tone/warning when your in the redline area.

Again anyone else who knows of a car that BEEPS when your near the Red let me know. I think the FD is the only one.

And you need a shift light on top of that? The cockpit of the RX-7 is almost perfect the way it is. I just think if your buying gauges, there are some useful gauges to be purchased besides another tach.
