How effective is wastegate porting on the FD3S?

Hey guys, i am a s5 turbo owner and will soon be an FD owner later this summer. I have done all of the reliability mods to my FC including porting the wastegate... its very easy and killed my boost creep by 70%.

I am just wondering how effective the wastegate porting is on the FD turbo's...

I have never seen the internals of the FD turbos, but from what i can tell from the outside there are two seperate wastegates (two actuators), so based on that i say that porting the FD wastegate will be very effective.. but thats only in theory.

BTW: I plan on running 80mm turbo back, intake and no emissions.. w/ all reliability mods etc etc.

Also, can you guys post a few pictures of the internals of the FD TT's?

Thanks,

Ben

It's fairly effective for a majority of the people who experience boost creep. However, there are some in which the porting does not help. In those cases they generally take one of two paths:

1. Restriction plates in the exhaust
2. Get a larger wastegate door to enable larger porting

I believe Garfinkle provides services for #2. However, most people never need to go that far.....

Actually, there are 3 actuators moving three "doors" within the exhaust manifold: wastegate, turbo pre-control, and turbo control.

very usefull for me. I have zero boost creep, but i ported it beyond what is recommended and just enough for the flap to fit over.

Ya thats waht i did with my S5 turbo...

well thats good to hear, i love boost.. but only under my terms. I dont want to deal with a blown engine.

Thanks,

Ben

Finding a no compromises gas station and noting their tank fill schedule would be a good idea too. Many a rotary have fallen victim to razor tunes and bad gas at the pump. Boost creep is at least predictable. It is most often the unforseen that will do in your peanut doritos.

With a fully open exhaust (dp/mp/cb) it may be difficult to keep boost down even with a ported wastegate, especially in colder weather. Solutions are to deal with it by running more boost and tuning for it. This may require larger injectors, etc. Restrictor plates in the exhaust are a waste. Just leave the cat on in that case. I remember in cold weather I couldn't keep my boost below 15 psi with full bolts ons and ported wastegate.

Stock sequential twins + full catless exhaust resulted in boost creep (up to 17 lbs when trying to run 12). Swiched to poorman's non seq, still creeped in higher gears but the transition spike was gone. Pulled everything off, removed all seq doors and such, smoothed out the manifold and ported the area around the wastegates, went through 2 $50 bits, the result was worth the effort. Rock solid boost control with no creep and noticably better spool up time over the poor man non seq setup.

hmm, is there a way to run an aftermarket exhaust manifold taht has an external wastegate as well as the stock wastegates??

Also what is the stock boost on the FD?

Not with the stock turbos.

used to have the profec b spec II set at 21%....i now set it at 30% for 10.5psi...why because Im asking for real 10.5 across the rpm band because it hold true...whereas i used to set for 8psi and hit 10.5 by the top of the rpm band
