How does 1mm of turbo shaft play compare?
Greetings,
I'm selling a set of turbos to another forum member. I don't want to cheat the guy, so I want to make sure they're not worn out. one turbo has just shy of 1mm of shaft play, and the other has just over 1mm if play. Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks,

1 mm is about .039 inches ,that is to much shaft clearence and to much end play. Are you checking the clearence correctly ? If you check it by shifting end of the shaft the error is times 4.

Measuring by grabbing the center of the pinwheel and pulling it to one side, and then pushing as far as it will go the other way. We did it horizontally and vertically, and both times it came out to 1mm. -BN

dude - 1mm is a small number and hard to reliably measure - imho. something like an 1/8" is different in human terms. --- yet I don't know what is the significant value for play in a turbo..

1 mm = .039 inch this is alot to someone who works with tight tolerences . The shaft play should be about point 008 inch ,I do not know the end play measurement but .039 is way to much, I think, Correct me if I am incorrect. Please show us the information.

I'm asking for the information. Additionally, when working with such a vague term as 'dealing with small tolerances," it's COMPLETELY irrelevant unless it's applied specifically to the pertinant application. Meaning--that doesn't mean **** unless .039 inches is a lot of tolerance for OUR TURBOS.
If anyone has any idea what is a lot of play for OUR TURBOS, please respond. Thanks,

He only gave a vague answer to a vague question. YOU should include more pertinant information as to where exactly you measured and should know that no one measures a machined part to be "1 mm" a more appropiate measurement would be "1.00 mm." Thats much more informative.

I called a turbo shop. They said that tolerance of a newly rebuilt turbo is about .020/inch. These (when converted to inches) have .039. He said that they are getting loose, but still usable. He said that if abused, they would need a rebuild in the next 15k--just for everyone's info.
