R1's have no sunroof, and they have a front lip/rear spoiler combo that are unique to the model... Everybody and their brother seems to have the R1 lip on their cars now though...

R1's and R-2's

- Have no sunroof
- Have stock wing
- Have stock front lip spoiler
- No automatic transmission
- Synthetic suede seats (like velcro for cotton clothing)
- Dual oil coolers (look inside both front corner vents and you should see one in each)
- Front and rear anti-roll bars
- Front and rear shock-tower braces (one under the hood should be red with an RX-7 emblem)

Actually Mazda did tell you it was an R1, Mazda's internal term for an R1 is "hard suspension".

This is an R1. If you go to www.mazdausa.com and create a user profile for yourself you can check VINs of Mazda vehicles.

The person you spoke with must not have had access to the same information or missed the "Trim" line in the description (it says "R1" for R1 models).

Also, "hard suspension" is Mazda nomenclature for the R1/R2 suspension package.

Just so you know, the car has a salvage title. That could mean any number of things, from it was stolen and recovered to it was totalled out in a wreck and hacked back together. That's why the price is so low.

I would be VERY hesitant to buy a car that far away with a salvage title. Trust me, spend a little extra and get a nice car to start with, and you'll thank me down the road.

BTW, if you have decent credit, you can use Capital One auto finance to finance an FD - I did for my car. Got a good interest rate and a 60 month loan, so I had good monthly payments.

Read my guide to Buying an FD for some hints -

Looks like it could be an R1. Someone has removed the strut tower bar. Can't tell if it has the dual oil coolers. Don't buy this car without looking at it. It looks like it is in need of some work. Maybe a lot. If it has the original engine & turbos, they may need to be replaced soon. That will be very expensive.

do you realize your caps lock is on?

mazdausa reports it as being a R1, but its missing a bunch of stuff (probably ties with it being a salvage title)

seller said it was hit in the fender, it probably didn't fit anymore

The seats appear to be from an R1. While that's not bullet-proof verification, they're generally pretty expensive to swap out. It appears to be just what the seller says it is. In addition to what DaleClark and adamc mentioned, it sounds like the coolant seals might be going as well.
I don't know. At the risk of sounding like a snob, I'd be nervous of anyone who can't write an ad description at a level higher than the 3rd grade.

Also you guys are forgetting.. R1's don't have cruise control. The one up for debate on auto trader shows no cruis control in 3 places. The engine bay, steering wheel, and dash.

Even though there is no strut tower brace in the front its a R1.

Also to point out all FD's have a rear strut tower bar. Not just the R1's.

Another tid bit of info. The early R1's were miss labled by mazda as base models because the dealerships thought they were. No sun roof and cloth int they assumed base.

Log on, and then go to "Edit Vehicle Information". It will have a "Trim" row with the types of the vehicle.
