How do you tell if engine is original?
Has anyone confirmed that this is true?

I would swear that my car has the original engine, but the numbers stamped on my water pump housing do not match the VIN number. And I have all the Mazda service records, and Mazda never put another engine in it.
It seems like no matter what adjustments I make to the idle, it is never right, and my vacuum is low (10 to 12 inches at idle). I'm wondering if I have a street port or something.

the way to see if its your original motor or not is to look underneath the alternator. there will be a number stamped there that begins with "E" and is followed by six numbers ("Exxxxxx") where those numbers equate to your car's VIN number. makes it simple to see if an engine has been replaced or not. -gordon

I dont understand how can you not have the original motor?? You cant get a "new" motor, you have to have a rebiuld. Or unless you give them your block and they just give you a rebiult motor??

that number will not match the vin on the car. it will appear on a waranty printout, however. you need to go to the dealer and have them run a warranty report

Perhaps that will tell you something, not sure though.

I bought the car anyway because the mech said that it had been put back together very will and was a strong car. I have not regretted the decision to buy in the three years I have owned it, but I would certainly not rely on carfax alone.
