Question How do you remove ABS Heat Shield?

I'm trying to get the ABS heat shield off. I know there's supposed to be four 12mm bolts. I can see where three are but I don't know where the last one is?

Can someone please help. Also, if someone has a picture of the bolts I need to remove that would be AWESOME!

Thanks.

Good question - I've tried to remove it for better access when doing a downpipe, but it seemed like you had to remove the pump to totally remove the heat shield. But I could be wrong .

Of course, you CAN totally remove the pump, but that'll be some serious work re-bleeding the brakes and everything .

Remove the two bolts on holding the heat shield, and then remove the two bolts holding down the ABS unit, then wiggle the heat shield out, takes some persuasion but its pretty easy. Make sure you remove the two bolts (closer to the fender) so that the ABS unit can be lifted up.

yea you can get the heat shield out without unbolting the pump from the body. if your unbolting it just to get some more room to work around there, id say just unbolt the pump and move it a few inches out of your way. even with the lines hooked up you can still move it a little bit. thats what i did when i was trying to pull the enigne wiring harness through the firewall while taking my motor out.

If you could not figure this on your own, please please take some car maintenance classes before touching your car again.

Be nice. For someone who hasn't done it before, it is definitely not obvious that the heat shield can come off w/o removing the whole pump assembly. Give the guy some credit for at least asking the right question - I like these posts better than the "which BOV gives me more HP?" alternative. ;-)

How about this one:

What are you trying to do that requires removal of the ABS heat shield? Maybe we can help figure out a way to do it without removing the shield.

To take the shield off, you'll need to have the air hoses removed. Assuming you're removing this heat shield to get to the downpipe:
Be forewarned, removing this heat shield is magnitudes easier than installing the aftermarket downpipe.

I can't speak for the original poster, but removing the heat shield gives you more room to work around the turbos (and keeps you from scratching the crap outta your arms). In my case, it was during a downpipe install. You can still do the job with the heat shield in place, but it's easier without it there.

Hehe. You know, I traced down my bad control valve, did a hose job, redid the fuel, bigger injectors, etc. and had it running within a week... and the whole time I couldn't figure out how to get that damn heat shield off without removing the pump.

Angry

Bill,

If a person can't look at something as simple as the ABS shield and figure how to remove it, then they definitely are not mechanically inclined!

Plain and simple, they do not have the basic skills and most likely never will.
One can follow instructions, but being able to analyze and figure out by yourself; requires a bit more gray matter intergration.

Many new owners never touched anything mechanical until they bought their dream car. Thus they have none or limited abilties.

Just like I had to do algebra and calculus with my mind or slide rule, today they use calculators. Thus their abilities are less and will take longer to develope.

Just like learning languages is easier when youger than older. It is the way the mind and nature operates.

In this internet blameless society, why learn? You usually can find someone to take pity on you and give you the answers.

Why do you think most of the older and experinced owners aren't here any more.

They are tired of the pathetic newbies!

First I would like to thank everyone who posted their helpful hints regarding the heat shield removal, especially the picture!

Second, I don't know what your problem is mr. cewrx7r1. You sound like a total jackass. If you don't have anything better to do, why don't you go and wack yourself off.

You run your mouth off like a little kid. Try acting your age you low life.

Probably a dumb question, but is there really any negative long term effects to pulling off that heat shield permanently? Mine is just an eyesore anymore, and I've thought about removing it in the past, but just never got around to it. With the precat gone, and a vented hood, I would think it would be safe.. anyone?

Brake fluid doesn't work well when you boil it. I can guarantee you that Mazda put it there for a reason, they spent a lot of effort reducing weight, if the shield wasn't needed they would've left it off.
