how do you guys tell if the belts are tight enough. do you guys do it by feel, trial and error, or with an actual belt tension gauge. is it ok to do it by feel.

If you have access to a tension gauge than you won't have to guess at the tension. Measure the tension between any two pulleys. You didn't specify if you are reusing the old belts or if you got new ones - obviously, there is a bit of diff. between the two in feel. The alternator belt if new should give you 700-800 N tension, if old then 600-700 N. The accessory belt if new should read 750-880 N and if used 550-650N.
This is of course assuming you have a tension gauge. Other wise you can tell by deflection - if you like I can find the specs. for you later.

I personally like the belts that i get from Mazda (OEM) over aftermarket ones. Aftermarket ones tend to sometimes sqweal as they wear and do not hold up to the underhood heat.

you can get a tension gauge from NAPA for less than $5. The maint. man. has the proper tensions for a new belt and used. it is apprx. 160-180 lbs for a new belt and 120 for a used one.
the part # for the gauge is something like KA-5 or KP-5 or something like that.

There should only be about a 1/2 inch of play in the belt. You don't want it super tight where there is no play but you don't want to much play either. 1/2 inch is standerd.

My belt had been overtightened when I bought the car and over time it wore out the bearing. I replaced it a couple of weeks ago. It was no big deal to fix, but I use a tension gauge now just to be sure
