How do you check if your radiator fans are getting power?

So my radiator fans arent turning on. given that the relays activate them, its getting a little tricky. ive extended my wires so my relays sit in the bin behind the dr seat.

thermoswitch is plugged in (FC)
Ive tested the relays, 2 were bad and ive replaced them. (whats that relay for by the diagnostics box?)
still dont work. i had the car in the "on" position a/c button on, fans at full, climate at heat. i was using a test light to check if i was getting power from the harness and i got nothing. does that mean im not getting power or the relays havent turned on yet?

am I checking this correctly? i doubt its the motor as they were working prior, and i swapped out an old set and nothing happened either.

If I cant find the problem im thinking of just cutting them out and wiring an electric thermostat where i can control what temp the fans kick on etc. any recommendations for this? i read a post a while back dudemanownsanrx7 did this as well. seems like it will simplify the wiring and make it easier

Wiring diagram will show you the path.

Check your big 60amp fuse 1st before you start replacing perfectly good relays. There's also 2 40amp fuses. One in the same location that's ignition switched with the 60 and one is in the other smaller fuse panel that's attatched to the battery terminal.

Some of the wiring is under a constant 12v. Also thermo switch only grounds one side of only 1 relay to both fans. I personally like using multimeters to check voltage over test lights. You can also run 12v directly to the fans to make sure they are still good.

I have the shop manual. that thing is like my bible.
60amp fuse is good.
b1 40amp is good
b2 40amp is good

the 2 relays i replaced were bad, they werent clicking nor getting continuity.

can you help explain (dumb it down) how to check if the harness getting power? do i use a multimeter (ground one end and other end to the B/Y wire?)

also will the a/c switch work even if i delete all my a/c stuff?

and does the water temp have to be at a certain temp for the fans to turn on using the a/c switch and running the fans?

thanks!

Is there a way to have the fans on no matter what the coolant temperature for testing purposes?

i spoke with rich and he said if i pull the egi fuse and leave the car in ACC the fans should turn on, can anyone concur this? its getting hard to figure out how to test the fans as i dont know when the relays will actually turn on...

you could use jumper wires to the battery to test them i would think.....

I know on my Miata I can use a jumper wire via the diagnostic box to turn in the fans, maybe the rx7 can too.

Found it here you go https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...ght=tfa+ground

Test light on the wires will tell you whether the fans are getting power.

If you have a PFC, you can also set the engage temp really low and visually inspect.

so the B/Y wire is getting power so the relays are receiving power. im assuming the harness (where the connectors meet) isnt getting power judging from when i used the test light. I was trying to test if the harness would get power but they wont untill the relays are triggered. This has left me to believe the relays arent getting a signal to trigger them.

since the thermoswitch provides the temp for the ecu, im assuming that connection has to be good. so right now im left with diagnosing if the relay to the ecu is good. does that sound correct? any other possible ideas as im running out of things to check. this is pretty much the last test i can figure out..

Since you relocated your harness to the back, I would start with doing a continuity test of all the related wires that travel to the back bins. It's very possible a connection may have been severed or come loose over time. If your getting 12v back their, you can also ground the relays yourself to see if the fan kick on. Have you applied 12v and ground directly to each fan to make sure they work? I used these same fans on my engine test stand for my 20b.

thanks everyone, i spoke with my mechanic and he helped me out. i did connect the gnd and tft and did in fact hear the relays click. since they clicked he told me to check my grounds. silly mistake, i connected my relay ground to my motor ground (black wire to black wire) instead of to grounds! cut the wires and grounded them and viola! fans work ahaha
