Im talking about that nut on the countershaft that you have to put something like 120lb-ft of torque on. I got it off before I rebuilt it by borrowing a fellow 7 owners driveshaft that he was selling. He sold it though. Is there any other way of stopping the tranny from moving without me having to take my driveshaft off?

im kinda confused by the post weither or not the transmission is out of the car or not.
If it is, rather than a rag between the gears, you can put the transmission in two gears at once, and this will lock it up so you can tighten whatever it was you need to do

To get it to go into two years at once, you can remove the safety pins that are in there to prevent this OR you can remove the roll pin from one of the shift forks and then manually slide it into two gears at once. After you're done you either need to replace the roll pin or replace the safety pins....

An intermediate shaft; esp., one which receives motion from a
line shaft in a factory and transmits it to a machine.

If you're rebuilding a transmission, for ****'s sake SAY that you're rebuilding a transmission, and describe what it is you're trying to do. The answer to "how do you stop the transmission from turning" is different if the transmission is in the car vs. out of the car, obviously.
The point is, people who need help need to work on making themselves "helpable" by describing in better DETAIL what their problem is.

The second option is to remove one of the doors circled in red - you will see a roll pin holding the shift fork to the shift rod. Drive it out, and now you can slide that shift fork into another gear than the one the shifter is set to.

So if you remove the three bolts in the blue circle, the shift rods will not be interlocked and you can slide the tranny into two gears at once. It may be necessary to remove the bottom cover of the gearbox to manually push them into gear.

Im just gonna wedge a piece of wood in between the gears. I talked to Ray and thats what he suggested since I no longer have access to a driveshaft.
