Then you're using the wrong type of filter, because it should have an anti-drainback valve that holds the oil inside it. I never have a problem with leaking oil when I remove the filter.

EDIT: Nevermind, Damon covered the subject...

Well I am glad I asked then.

Someone spit off some filter part numbers and let me double check mine.

P.S. I use the OEM Mazda filter. Not sure how that could be wrong. In the past I have used Fram, but was flamed away from those sometime ago.

Wait, Hold On, I'll Search.

Ok, I am using the correct filters. Don't scare me guys.

Searched a bit and others have had some leakage issues too, when removing the filter.

Read pages two and some of three. I always end up changing the oil once it is warm (due to me running out and buying the supplies), so I guess I will always have some drippage.

I have a 1988 Mercedes 300TE wagon with a 1995 C36 powertrain, and a 1993 Mercedes 500E.

They both have drain-plugs, but I never use them.

Some "drippage" (as in a couple of drops here and there) maybe; "make a mess", no. I've changed the oil filter both warm and cold, and it made no difference-- the filter basically held everything and didn't drop its contents everywhere.
