Talking Wood Ramp It Up

I looked a bit for ramps, but did not find ramps that would fit under the fenders without hitting them and sliding.
The curb was not high enough.
Cheap solution if you have some scrap lumber or buy a little: Get a bunch of 1x8 or 1x10 boards. Cut to progressive lengths; longest maybe 6 feet. . Make a block for the end so it is hard to drive off the end! Nail or bolt them together.

If you want the rear raised a bit, could have another short set for the rear.

Slide under to drain oil; I drain directly to a plastic jug I use to cart the oil to the recycling auto parts store.

I feel much more comfortable with a ramp than my jack stands.

why would you do that??? for one, some of those manufacturers HAVE to do that cause they dont have a drain plug on their oil pan, they do this so the owners cant do their oil themself and risk causing a problem and blaming it on the manufacturer.. they have to go to the dealer for that to prevent any problems..

but we have drain plugs, its easy, jack the car, go under, get a socket and voila! done!!

i have to do mine before the month ends for the final oil change for the horrible winter

Have you ever actually changed the filter from under the car? Plugs, yes...Filter, I bet not.

So you don't have to jack the car up! Just crack the filter one turn so it also drains while it's being sucked up.

Do it on a warm engine, not a hot one.

My two Mercedes have drain-plugs, but they're never touched (no crush washers to replace) and hence never leak!

I didn't believe you can suck the same amount, but after sucking it out, and then opening the drain plug, nothing comes out! This is true of my Dodge van and motorcycle as well, which both have drain plugs!

I'll give it a try and post the results.

Hell, siting under the jeep to change oil. My 1st Gen is all from the top 1) slide pan under 2) remove oil filter (same palce as 3rd Gen, but with NO juck around or above 3) reach down to drain plug (again lots of space around and above - with headers) the biggest chore is pan from the right filter from the left and plug from the right again .. too much walking

I jack the car from under the left door sill to raise both left side tires in the air. This tilts the oil towards the drain plug and gives me enough room underneath to get to the oil drain. I have a Fram Sure Drain plug installed and I drain my oil into empty 2 liter coke bottles; they're much easier to take back and forth to the store to empty then the big plastic dump pans. I use a socket type oil filter wrench to remove the old filter and I install the new filter hand tight after lubing the seal.

With the Fram drain valve and the coke bottles I don't spill a drop or get dirty at all other than laying under the car. I also never have to worry about the bottles leaking. Every drain pan I've ever bought leaks after a short time. I've never trusted them.

No need for that. Just twist off the old Filter before you drain the oil.

I've changed the oil filter many, many times and oil has never spilled out of the filter while taking it off.

I alway have oil leaking out of the filter. You have to be quick, turn the filter on it's side and pull it out of the engine bay in order not to drip oil on everything. By draining it I have noticed this decreases.

Helps of course on a warm engine.

You guys are wacked!

First, the oil filter is upside down so any oil in it will have already drained out when you parked.

Second, you should be using a filter that has an anti-drainback valve like the stock one so that the oil stays trapped in the filter and DOES NOT drain out (this makes certain the engine is not momentarily starved of oil at the next startup as the filter fills).

Third, you don't have to remove the filter to make the oil drain from the sump because the sump is not sealed; it vents through the pvc and the vac line to the intake.

Fourth, if you still insist the sump needs to vent you just unscrew the oil fill cap...

If you have oil dripping from your filter you're not using a proper filter with an anti-drainback valve. I remove my filters as soon as they are cool enough to touch and never have a drop of oil come out of them. They literally hold the oil inside.

Just always done it that way. Not sure who turned me on to it though. I'll try it the "normal" way next time.

And 5th....if you have to ask how to change the oil you really shouldnt be driving a 3rd gen unless you have huge amounts of money to pay someone else to do everything......however I doubt thats the case or else you wouldnt be changing your own oil.

Good Luck!
