How can I get this off?

Hi All:

The previous owner of my car had the J&S Safeguard's gauge stuck to the tach using some very sticky double-sided tape.

I removed the gauge, but now there is a a super sticky film that has been left behind. What can I use to remove this that will not damage the tach's face?

TIA,
Sonny

Try some acetone on a cloth. That might work.

I've used acetone on plastic before and it is definitely 'corrosive' to the plastic. Damn, I wish this guy would have stuck this gauge somewhere else!

Damn didn't know acetone would eat away at plastic. It works on metal at least haha.

What other kinds of solvents are plastic friendly?

Solvents and plastics usually don't belong in the same sentence together. That's why I asked here...I don't wanna screw up my tach.!

It's simple. Just go kick the previous owner's *** for putting that on there. If you don't any residue, don't put the things on in the first place. You could always get a new tach.....

I'm not exactly sure where you talking about on the guage face, but Autobody supply stores have 3M Adhesive Remover. Safe for all plastics and painted surfaces. It's what they use to remove the adhesive residue from moldings etc.
No matter what you use, I would take a Q-tip or something similar and try it in a very localized area first just to be certain.
Then I'd go kick the old owner's ***.

GOO GONE has yet to fail me also. It has taken most of the glue from the stickers the original owner had, and did not damage any of the material. Its available at Home Depot, Lowes, any type of hardware store.

FYI, Goo gone is Zippo fluid. Seriously it's the same stuff.

They're all petroleum distillates - which brings us full circle back to WD-40.

Try a staight citrus cleaner. I'm also a road cyclist, and I bought mine at a bicycle shop under the Finish Line brand. It will not damage plastic or paint finishes, but does remove adhesives from stickers. Do not dilute it- use it straight from the can. I use it all the time for removing left behind adhesive. Good stuff, smell good, but not exactly cheap.
