how can i fireproof my car?
how can i fireproof my car?
Hey,
I have become concerned, after reading several posts and seeing several pics, about my car's possibility of catching fire.
I was wondering if anyone can come up with a list of 'fireproofing' mods. I already have the 'reliability' mods burned into my memory. I just want to know what all i can do to help prevent a fire.Like new FPD, fire extinguisher, etc.. ?
And on another note, are recall repairs free? If My FD hasnt had a particular, or any, recalls done, can i get them done for free? Is it worth risking the dealership messing something else up on my car? Thanks for the help!

There's really a ton of stuff you could do. SS lines for the fuel lines, npr fittings... coating/wrapping the downpipe would probably help too since it gets so hot.
recalls are free and its probably worth it to let the dealer touch the car.
personally i only know of 1 fd that had an engine fire, are there really that many and is it due to bad modding or what?

I just saw the rx-7 for sale on ebay that looked like it went through a MASSIVE engine fire. I remember reading about a couple over summer too. I think atleast one was due to the FPD.
There really isn't much you can do. Parts wear out and fail. It happens. You can purchase a new FPD, and it could fail the next day.
The #1 thing is to have a fire extinguisher in the car.
Other than that, just do regular checks on the car.

To COMPLETELY "fireproof" it, just never put fuel in it and drive it......I guarantee it won't catch fire!
Seriously, do all the reliability mods and carefully inspect and repair/replace any suspect item in the fuel and electrical systems.
You could put an automatic Halon extinguishing system in the engine bay, go to any boat dealership/marine supply store and pick one up for a $200 or so for the size you'd need for the engine bay.
I have this on my boat, it IS a nice feeling to know that you have that on board, I must say.
And get a small extinguisher to carry in the car.

I just put mine in the shop b/c of a strong fuel odor when the car is cut off and sits for a few minutes. No garage, so it's a bit too cold here to try to do it myself. But, as has been said in this thread, I always keep an extinguisher in every vehicle and my home. Guess we'll see what the problem was in a few days.
At the first sign of fire you pull a **** and it dumps an extinguishing agent onto the engine through specifically placed nozzles. You do it from inside the car or mount it right outside the hood. It's a pressurized system also used on track cars. Very sweet, but I thought it cost more than that, gotta look into it more.

A halon hard-wired kit has nozzles pre-mounted in the engine bay and/or the cockpit. The tank is stored in the trunk typically, so to extinguish a fire all you have to do is flip a switch. You wouldn't even need to get out of the car

PS already got a fire extinguisher =)
The system in my boat's engine bay is fully automatic, it relies on heat sensors to deploy the system.
I think the driver-activated systems sound better for a road car, though....good point!
