How bad does 93 paint suck???

Pulled the engine out of my 1993 Silver stone base to detail the engine bay, do the body work, and paint the car, and I cleaned the engine bay with easy off oven cleaner, and a stainless steel scrub pad, and almost ALL the paint rubbed right off. The engine bay is now that zinc color that the unpainted steel has

Now I got to get it painted before it rusts

Uh, the paint isn't that bad. Cleaning with over cleaner IS THAT BAD. Oven cleaner is absolutely made for ovens, not engine bays. It'll ruin aluminum, strip the plating off all the bolts, heater lines, brackets, and strip paint off, etc.

It is very corrosive, to late for you, but hopefully others will read this thread and learn from your mistakes.

No doubt - I always use Castrol Super Clean and a nylon brush to clean the engine bay.

Good luck repainting the engine bay - I've done that before, and it's a CHORE to do it right.

OVEN CLEANER and a STEEL SCRUB PAD! ON PAINT? YIKES!

Can I ask why you would even consider using such items on your poor car?

Umm, Sodium Hydroxide (oven cleaner) is a paint stripper.

http://doityourself.com/painttools/u...tstrippers.htm

Caustic Alkalis: Caustic alkalis react with the paint coating and loosen it from the surface. One of the chemicals in this type of stripper is sodium hydroxide (lye). Some people do not use caustic alkalis because caustic products can darken wood and raise the grain. Caustics can cause severe burns to skin and eyes even on short contact. Therefore, be very careful to keep caustic chemicals away from skin and eyes and wear protective clothing. If contact occurs, wash off immediately with cold water. Caustics are also highly toxic if swallowed.

* It is very important to avoid skin and eye contact when using caustic alkalis.
* Use gloves that fit properly and are appropriate for caustic alkalis.
* Wear appropriate protective clothing and goggles when using caustic alkalis.

wow...all i can say is wow....the only reason i could ever see to use something like that to clean my engine bay was to have an excuse to re-paint the entire car...

I am repainting the entire car! I hate it when people paint the car, but leave the jams/engine bay the old color.... That's why I pulled the engine.... I just spent $350 dollars on paint, and $200 on an HVLP gun.

And your right, it is a good excuse to repaint the car! With the awsome dark green mika (sp) paint that i got. Looks so awsome

Ohhh, and I've done this to FC's before and it didn't remove the paint??? That's why it suprised me. I used a scotch pad before, so the steel scrub pad was alot harcher, but otherwise I didn't think it would remove all the paint. But I'm happy, saved me alot of sanding, now all I have to do is ruff it up a little.

we used oven cleaner at the shop to clean the underside of hoods if they were coverd in oil. Cleaned them great without any hard scrubing. Invest in some schoch brite pads, It would have cleaned and preped as you scrubed.
