Hood Release Wont Work

So I bought this car in january and there isn't a month that has gone by where something doesn't go wrong or break on this car. I may be even worse than my Eclipse GSX and that is saying something.

The current problem just happened tonight. I have a coolant leak somewhere in the engine bay. I just cleaned and reinstalled the upper radiator hose because some of the leaking was coming from there. I get home tonight to check and see if its still leaking and guess what? The hood release in the cabin doesn't work, so now I can't open my hood. Is there a way to manually release the hood so I can open it?

Funny, this didn't come up in the forum search, but came up in a google search. Why is it whenever you search for anything on these forums you get the most random threads. I mean if you put in "Hood Latch" into the search it brings up every thread where anyone even mentioned either word at any point, or if it's in the sig of someone that posted in that thread. It makes the search function more of a pain in the *** than an actual tool. Which is why you see more threads where people tell you to use the search function. We did, but we're just tired of looking through pages of threads that have nothing to do with what we need to know....Ok, venting over.

try using the advanced search feature, you can select which sub forums to search and you can search in titles only instead of full thread content.

I think there was a hood latch recall in 2000, (could be wrong) but if its the release cable or the bracket it might not be covered.
for the time being you'll need to get down there and take a look, most often the grooved end of the cable breaks and it won't be held in the bracket properly. hold the insulated portion of the cable with a firm grip or pliers if you need and pull on the release.
other possibility is the release lever broke and you'll have to pull the end of the cable.
also possible but less fortunate is that the cable may be detached at the striker end (under the hood. in that case you may need to get at it from under the car with a long screw driver or some other tool to actuate the lever that the cable pulls. best of luck

I tried pulling on the cable from under the dash with the handle pulled all the way and the cable wouldn't move, so I don't know what's up. Doesn't seem the cable it's self is broken.

Its the green tip that broke off under the release. I bought my car last year with 171,000 miles. The first thing I had replaced was the cable because it happened to me a long time ago with a friend's car and it was only 8 years old at the time.

New hood cables aren't much new from Mazda, like $30-40 or so. That includes the whole cable AND the plastic pull that goes under the dash.
