Hood Movement

Does anyone else have a problem with his or her hood bouncing around? Is there a solution to this problem or is it a nature of the beast. Once on the highway it picks up a little and acts like its going to fly open. It’s a bit nerve racking and I don’t know how to adjust it. If there is even an adjustment. Any info would be appreciated.

Don't know if it's a common problem with all FDs, but my hood does the same. I tried spacing the hood bumpers that are located above the wheel wells, which helped a little.

My stock hood is solid to over 240km/hr, but at my elevation the air is thin (3300ft)

Id hate to ruin the sleek look of the hood with pins. If I do are there any suggestion on what brand to get. The car is all blacked out and the idea of 2 ugly chrome pins on the hood would defeat the purpose.

Mine does the same. It bounces because the rubber snubbers aren't holding the hood tightly to the latch. No danger of opening but it does move some at highway speeds. I've been planning to shim the snubbers but never remember to do it. My biggest worry is the catch on the hood itself. Since the hood moves a little the latch is fretting and trying to saw through the hood catch!

Just go to home depot and pick up some 3/4" felt adhesive furniture pads. The little circles you put under speakers to keep from scratching tables.

I don't have the problem on my RX-7, but on my Maxima I did it Saturday and it works like a charm.

The source may be a worn latch, the latch hoop on the hood or a combination of both. You might want to check. If it's been loose for a long time it only accelerates the wear and adjusting the bump stops may not help. Sometimes it gets difficult to use the hood release as well. Just a thought.

I had the exact same problem, although when I shimmed the bumpers, it seemed to stop the wearing of the hood latch. Granted, the hood still moves a little, but a lot less than before.

To resurrect an older thread, I noticed that my hood seems to be bouncing quite a bit.

The furniture pad idea sounds good. I think I might try that. Does anyone have any suggestions?

My current and previous FDs have has this problem. I tried a rubber spacer on top of the rubber stoppers and it just made the hood sit high.

It's pretty scary watching the hood at 120mph!

I just noticed this myself recently, although I don't think it used to happen. Anybody try adjusting the bumpers or any other solutions? I'm in the 'no hood-pin' club so I'd rather have a hidden solution.

Mine shakes so bad over 120 mph that it looks like it isn't even latched. Kind of scary.

Has anybody ever installed the washers mentioned here:

http://www.rx7.org/public/3RD.html

6. SQUEAKING SOUND FROM HOOD.
Service bulletin #057/92, Category S, issued 12/15/92
Applies to vehicles with a VIN of JM1FD33**P0208750 or lower
produced through July 2, 1992. After July 2, the hood was
modified to eliminate this condition.
Install a washer (part# FDY1 56 788) under both cushion rubbers
under the front of the hood.

Ahhh! I have this sound! I always thought it was coming from my left front suspension, but I think this is probably what it is!

Not necessarily .

I had a front squeak that I assumed was from the hood. It turns out that it was from a worn anti-roll bar bushing allowing metal-to-metal contact.

I have the same hood movement. Tried washers under the bumpers, based on the idea that they would push up the hood and close the gap between the latch attached to the body and the hood "latch bar," (sorry I don't know the correct name for this but it is the short, longitudinal bar, seemingly riveted to the front of the hood that engages with the latch connected to the body). No luck - only minor improvement, and it made the hood release difficult to operate, (needed to pull the release lever very hard, and gave me concerns over the possibility of breaking the cable).

So I tried to adjust the hood latch downwards via the adjusting slots where it connects to the body, but they are already at the end of their travel, so there is no more adjustment. The true cause of problem seems to be the wear on the hood "latch bar." It has worn down where it engages with the hood, presumably due to the constant movement of the hood. My guess is that, during latching the hood, the latch has to clear the original diameter of the "latch bar," but once in place it then lines up with the worn area and is thus loose. Once latched, you can definitely push the hood up and down a significant amount.

Has anybody been successful full at replacing this "hood latch?" It seems to be part of the hood and appears to be riveted on.

As an alternative, I considered welding some more metal onto the latch bar and then grinding it down to size, but I don't see a way to do this without damaging the hood paintwork due to the heat. I also thought of trying to put a sleeve on the bar but there is just not enough clearance to increase the bar diameter very much. I suspect that the alternative of building it up with some type of epoxy wouldn’t last long either.

Help please, gurus. Any ideas or success stories? This scares the heck out of me - every day I have visions of the wind catching under the hood and ripping it right off!

Dave

I fixed mine by shimming the rubber stops and adjusting the hood latch. You have to work with it because the snubbers determine how the hood aligns with the rest of the body. Once you get the hood to sit properly then adjust the latch to hold it in place.

I've looked at completely replacing the entire wire latch assembly that's riveted to the hood but I'm not certain if it will come out. I'm considering just completely cutting the portion that engages in the latch out and welding a new piece of rod in there. It shouldn't harm the paint if done carefully.

My concern is that the wire on the hood which the latch grasps is really worn. If that were to break the hood will fly open because the safety catch on the bumper still grasps that same piece of wire.
