hood latch broke off the hood!

When I went to shut the hood after checking the oil today the metal loop broke off the hood. Now (obviously) it wouldn't latch shut. Has anybody had this happen? I know there is a recall for the same problem with mazdaspeed hoods, was there one for the stock hood as well? If anyone wants to sell me an aftermarket hood at a good price let me know.

Can you still get a latch for your stock hood or is the hood junked? I've never heard of the latch broken btw. Good luck dude. If you do get the aftermarket hood, I think there is an open hood w/ a viper-like vent up front and some openings in the middle. I think that's the best looking open hood.

Mazda sent a recall letter to all rx7 owners on the mazdaspeed hoods. The hinge is supposed to be reenforced so they don't fly loose. You can call mazda's 800 number if you want to get your recall done.

Be thankful that you did not find out while driving. Would have meant a new hood, new windshield, and a new roof welded in place of the old - and paint.

Check the Group Buy section for Mazdaspeed replica hoods from Attila and 65imp.

Can't you have a new loop welded on?

I'm not sure if it's possible to have it welded on. The steel plate is rivoted onto the top layer of the hood. Another layer is then welded on. The problem is the opening on the second layer that the loop comes through is smaller than the steel base of the loop-meaning even though it broke off it's too big to pull through the hole of the second layer. Maybe mazda designed it this way to act as a safety catch.

The part that broke isn't in plain view either. It may be possible to reweld but they will need a very small piece of equipment to get in there.

Also it appears that the two parts would have to be welded end to end rather than one on top of the other. I don't know how strong this would be. As you guys said it's a good thing it didn't happen while I was driving, I don't want to set myself up for that by taking the cheap route out here.

Ideally I'd like to find a used 94 Montego blue hood and just install it as is. This winter I'm planning on having some body work down. I'll deal with the color match then. I'm also playing around with the idea of getting a vented hood. I've always wanted one, but there's a bunch of other stuff on my shopping list before it (fix oil leak, replace leaky shocks, replace rear suspension bushings, fix turbo problem, add ic bla bla bla). Maybe this is a sign that the car really wants a vented hood. I'm not in the habit of denying its wishes so maybe I'll just do that.

Easyist solution is HOOD PINS, get a set and mount them at the front edge of the hood at the same location as the rubber hood stops. get the style with captive latch pins mounted on top of the hood.

Agreed, but I don't like how they look-at least on a street car. I'm thinking of cutting away the support plate around the steel loop mount so that I have room to replace the loop mount and rivot it back in there. Does anybody know if you can buy the steel hood loops w/o buying a new hood? I'm going to make a few calls tomorrow.

Garfinkles broke on one of his silver cars , he drilled out the rivits and put wet rages under the parts and brazed the loop back on then rerivited the plate back on .Then put the hood back on .A little spray paint under the hood ,and about an hours work.
