get some of the reflect (space blanket) crap. its super light and reflects heat great. as for where to get it or how easily it is to shape, i have no idea.

I am pretty sure that without it wears away the paint on top of the hood at high temp areas...not sure though.

Figures. When I bought my car the paint looked terrible. It was also missing the insulator. Guess I'll have to address that before the new paint job.

It will melt. You can buy fiber filled hood liner from JC Whitney made expressly for this purpose. Cut to fit. It will also keep noise down besides saving your paint.

Thanks, I'll see what JC Whitney has to offer.
I know I need something to keep the heat from turning the paint on my hood (repainted 4/2001)

i could really use some insulation like this as well, i have a replica mazdaspeed CF hood, and i am worried that the heat generated from my single-turbo manifold will start marring the hood after a while, is this insulation or space-blanket described easy to install? what is used to affix it to the underside of the hood?

it looks like aluminum foil but it has more fabric to it. i would probably cut it to shape, maybe sectioned and then use a high temp epoxy (master-carr catalog, etc) to bond it to the surface. of course cleaning the surface well will be vital. here are some links. there are different materials and purposes. the "space blanket" was just the best name i thought of to describe it.

etc and so on. their not real expensive so the rest is ingenuity and shop skills.
